surely a discovery?!!

After all the help from various people on here, for which i am grateful,i have decided that i dont want to risk being on the maximum limit when towing with my picasso 2.0 hdi,so have decided to swap it for an older discovery 2.5 diesel..anyone know of any common pitfalls with this vehicle?Have been told it makes a great towing car and should easily pull our abbey 214 gts.....thanks...Mark

(btw Lutz ours is just the xsara picasso, not the c4)

Hi Mark,

When you say older, what mark of disco do you mean? I had a 97(R) TDi ES and I got rid due to its unreliability. In the 20 months I owned it I replaced:-

Head Gasket

3 x Water pumps

Heater Matrix

Rear Shocks

4 Tyres

Accessory belt pulley

And 2 belts

Battery

Headlight

Power Steer Pump

Plus more!

Great towcar, noisy, but I got totally p****d off when the steering pump went as I'm self employed and lost earnings so that spelt the end of it. Now have a Volvo S80 D5 Auto. Brilliant car for my needs, more economical, more luxurious and no need to repair daily.

BTW, I did all the work on the Landy myself, it is easy!!

Regards, Gaz

oh my god!!! that would be my luck i spose if and when i swap!!! i just want a good tow car with a bit of muscle under the bonnet!!!

Why don't you go for a Kia Sorento? Award winning tow car, incredibly reliable, good price. Do some online searches for reviews for the Kia and for the Discovery, and you will find that the Kia comes out top for reliability and good towing every time. Discovery has the kudos of the brand name, but terrible reputation for reliability. We have driven both, and whilst the Discovery is a nicer solo drive (when its not in the garage being repaired, the Kia is by far the better workhorse towing vehicle. It makes easy work of our twin axle (1865kg), towing effortlessly from London to Scotland. Had no problems with it at all.

Good luck!

Hi Mark,

I may have been unlucky with mine but don't let my post alone put you off. I liked the Disco, but it was the losing earnings that did it for me. Have a look at the forums on www.lro.com which is a great source of advice on all things Landy.

As for the Volvo, 2 injectors failed and that cost me nearly

We've had various Discoveries over the years.

The only one which cost us anything other than for routine maintenance, was an old 200 series L reg. We had to have the auto gear box repaired, apparently a common fault on those vehicles, and the head gasket went, it was no trouble after that, and I think we kept it for about three years. I beleive they ironed out alot of the problems with the older Discos when they introduced the 300 series, we had the same model as nineteenforever, it was a super car, and didn't cost us a penny.

Too much negativity IMO!!
