Sutton Bank Yorks

Hello All,
in the Spring ( when the weather warms! ) we are going to a site near to Helmesley in Yorks This part of the world is new to us, but part of our proposed route ( from the South ) will take us off theA1 at Junction 49 onto the A168 and the on the A170 east, to Helmesley. We were advised by someone that the A170 is best avoided because of a bad stretch around Sutton Bank. As this is an A road and we will be using it in May, does anyone know if there is a problem here?

Caravans are not allowed up or down Sutton bank, you will have to travel via the A64 past York to Malton then take the A169 to Pickering then turn left onto the A170 west ....

Well if my memory serves me right, I think that you will find that caravans are banned from Sutton Bank, so that makes it a big problem

. Again from memory, I seem to remember that that diversions are well signposted. After you get pitched and if you have time, try going for a drive over sutton bank, I think you will see why caravans are banned.

hello again, Thanks for that. I will do the Malton Pickering rou te and then one day we will take the trip you suggest and see Sutton Bank.I guess it may be something along the lines of Porlock Hill near Minehead! Cheers again

I was once coming back from Scarborough with my caravan, when I missed the turn off for the alternative route. I was getting more worried as I approached Sutton Bank but luckily there is a large lay-bye at the top of the bank and I was aable to turn round there.

hi, sutton bank is best avioded. if you get chance to look you will see why !! the main problem is the two tight bends so you lose all momentum during the climb "1in4 or "25%"if the roads busy it even worse good job vans are banned on it, Sir Sprocket has given you the correct alternative route it is a bit of a detour but nessesary with a van,
ps, while in the area Rievaulx abbey is well worth a visit,
