Hi Janet,

The vitara 2.5 v6 is on the whole very reliable but there are a couple of things to watch out for, make sure it has a full service history and if the engine rattles at all it probably needs new timing chains and tensioners this is quite common at higher mileages on vitaras that havn`t had regular oil and fiter changes, this could end up costing you somewhere around 800 to a thousand pounds.Hope this helps regards, Phil.

The 2.5 Vitara has a strangely sporting engine, a little out of place in an offroader. It comes alive when 4000rpm is on the clock, changing note and really bringing on the power. Don't dismiss it because of these characteristics though as there is plenty of torque low down too. A solid towing car with a reasonable ride, while handling isn't great it does have plenty of lateral grip. Reliable for the first 30,000 miles we had ours and seemed quite hard wearing but the seat covering wont please everyone. As Philtec pointed out, service history is important and an AA inspection would be a good idea. It's an often overlooked car but undeservedly so, you should find that it tows well and that engine can become addictive, but watch that fuel economy, it can make you weep!
