Swift Charisma Door Lock

I bought my Swift Charisma new 2 and a half years ago. The door lock gets very stiff, almost impossible to open after 3 to 4 months. I have had the lock (Hartell) replaced under warranty 4 times now. When I get the caravan back the lock is fine, but after 3 to 4 months it is stiff again. There has to be an answer to this, but Swift appear not to be responding to it

Hi Alistair

There is a simple way to fix the Hartal door lock :

1/ Using the point of a Stanley knife blade prise off the circular red and green plastic screw covers and the grey cover with Hartal written on it

2/ remove the four retaining screws and separate the lock from the caravan door.

3/ On a worktop or bench turn the lock assembly over and remove the circlip and double spring clip to release the locking handle from the lock assembly.

4/Use a round file or sandpaper to slightly enlarge the hole so that the handle moves freely.

5/Add a smear of petroleum jelly and reverse the procedure.

After the reassembled lock is refitted to the caravan door the handle will move freely and give no more trouble.

I have copied that list and will carry it in the caravan

I use Wilkinsons Teflon Bike Spray and that relaesed the lock the other day when it seem stuck and it is very smooth now

But the list will be in the van just incase

My Hartal lock was so stiff it seemed as though the key might snap off when I was trying to lock/unlock it.

I have followed Parksy's instructions and the lock works perfectly now - thanks.

My only comment would be to add that the circlip is quite difficult to remove!!

We bought a Swift Fairway 460 approx 2 and half years ago and have the same problem. My sister has an Abbey about one year younger and has had the same problem last weekend

Hi Parksy

Your solution to fixing the stiff lock worked absolutely perfectly. Apart from removing the circlip, which a neighbour solved with purpose made pliers it all went very quickly and easily and now I ahve a lock which works perfectly.

Why Hartel and Swift cannot solve this for themselves is beyond me as it is simply a matter of manufacturing tolerance being too tight.

Very many thanks

Alistair
