We have just got back from 2 weeks in Europe which took us through Switzerland into Italy and then back via France. Just a word of warning to anyone intending to go through Switzerland this summer - the St Gotthard tunnel is currently closed, so you will have to take the longer route through the St Bernard. Basle is full of roadworks and the traffic was horrendous. Driving through Zurich (had to go that way because of the St Gotthard closure) was no pleasure, since I was surrounded by pantechnicans at all times!

Coming back through Mont Blanc was much more pleasurable, although much more expensive.
 
I've had a bit of asurf around and it appears that the tunnel was closed because of rock slides at the end of May. I was proposed to open again on 25th June. TCS (a Swiss verion of the AA) states on their website that the tunnel is now open again......unless anybody has some more recent personal experience.
