We have an omni-directional ariel on our caravan, the reception is rubbish on some sites. We were thinking of replacing it with a Status 530/5 or 10. On closer inspection we discovered that the old ariel would need to be removed and a new hole drilled for the new ariel.

We have been looking at ariels that fix to the jockey wheel as we have an external T.V. point.

Just wondering which is the best to get as we really don't want to drill another hole in the roof.

All advice much appreiciated,
 
Hi Diane,

We had the status directional fitted to our Series 5 Pageant. It fitted where the omni was.

Reception is cracking - including freeview if you are in an enabled area.

Not had any problems with the fitting.

Not sure why but when we enquired about fitting they said that because of the TV cabinet depth, they would need to move it to a wardrobe. We have an Abbey Spectrum 530(TA).Quite concerned about another hole.

Is yours the 535 or 510

Ours is the 510 shorter pole. It fits inside the wardrobe so there was no problem for us with replacement of the omni.

Father in law had similar problem with Abbey Cardinal. His was relocated to other side of van about 4 months ago and hasn't caused any problem. We were hit badly with floods in June here in South Yorkshire and he hasn't reported any problem with leaking from the old fitting. So I think if it was going to leak it would have done at that point - although thats not to say it will stay that way!
 
I have just installed the 530/5 in place of the omni-directional.( Why do they still fit these because they are useless )It involved drilling a 45mm hole going into the wardrobe area.It would depend on where your old aerial is as to whether you can drill into existing hole.

Previous to this I had an awning rail mounted Vision Plus - similar to 530 design but got tired of erecting it at every site.

Were new to caravaning and the biggest problem we had was getting a good picture on the TV via our Omni directional aerial (round one). The best advice we were given was to get a free standing one and a booster box. All I did was fitted an aerial socket ( you can buy from any decent caravan accessory shop) in the battery box and plugged the aerial coax in and ran a coaxial lead under the seats to the TV table. The picture quality was 4 times better. I recommend if you get a free standing aerial try and get a few extra pole sections
 
Problem is MARK we have a TV Cabinet that has a spinning thing that allows us to watch TV in bed.Is mounted on the wall between the living area and bedroom.
 
I agree with Mark.

We have the Status Omni on our Elddis Avante, and previously on our Lunar Clubman.

Easiest thing is to have two extra sockets fitted to your caravan one each side of your revolving TV cupboard. (One hours DIY work), running under the bunks or even under the van,suitably secured with cable ties or clips, with a plug in socket in one of the lockers.

Then you can simply erect a pole type aerial (normal household roof type on a three piece alloy pole about 12/15 foot high) and plug in.

We've been on sites where TV reception has been almost non-existent with the Status, but with the normal TV aerial high above the van, the picture will be as good as you'd expect at home.

When the van is not in use, the whole aerial takes up very little space in the front locker or under a bunk.
