The Caravan Club and Towing Mirrors

Just back from a long trip and started reading 3 months of the Caravan Club magazine. May edition had an "Ask your Club"feature on new regulations regarding towing mirrors. This had a Q and A section that informed me that the new very expensive mirrors I bought from a Dutch stand at the NEC in February where illegal because thay didnt carry an EU kite mark. I was to expect £60 fine and penalty points if stopped by the police and my insurance would be void.

Although I had no intention whatever of scrapping the best mirrors I have ever owned I was less than happy with the the thought that I had paid nearly £80 for an illegal item.

Moving on to the June edition another "Ask your club" feature totally contradicted the previous stab at the subject and advised that new mirrors would not be required except for new car purcased after January 2010.

It would seem that the erronious advice had come from Milenco who are claiming to be the only legal supplier now.

If this is the best the Caravan Club can do how much faith should we have in the rest of thier advice?

David, during your long trip these "issues" have been discussed at length on several caravan forums, after consultation with VOSA.

The conclusion now is that nothing changes until 2010 and then only for new cars built from 2010.

Milenco's image is badly tarnished by issuing incorrect advice which would have seen us all lining their pocket unneccessarily.

Caravan Club's image is also tarnished for relying on a major advertiser for technical and legal information,

Cannoy speak for all cops, but I have better things to do than check kite marks on towing mirrors...

No mirrors might get you stopped, but on routine patrol, I have better things to do....

its good to hear from a policeman with common sence, it must be better to have some towwing mirrors than non at all, which I see more often than I should from my lorry cab, but what about bikes on the back of cars covering there lights! and with no lighting board leaving you to guess what they are up too.

As a retired Police Officer who spent a lot of my time dealing with traffic stuff I can say that I dont know of any Police Officer who would stop a car to see if the extended mirrors were marked correctly.

However, as David has said, no mirrors might get you stopped (and I hope it would).
