The Dreaded Midges

Encountered them again last week at a site in Kintyre. Seem to recall previous posts re change of name for avon skin so soft "woodland fresh" which worked on previous occasions. Can anyone advise of new name. Thanks.
 
William - Lord B. was genned up on this point as his good lady was once employed by Avon Cosmetics (not the tyre company) and he was very attractive to the Scottish midges (I think it was his titled blood that attracted them). Unfortunately you will need to wait for him to return from his tour of Scotland in two weeks time.

Where were you? LB has just gone to Carradale.

Midge season is from end of may to end of Aug.Outwith these times you will be ok.

Wonder whether global warming will make them multiply.....I hope not.

Maureen I have no need to worry about midges as in Gods chosen country we do not have these problems. I cannot see us venturing to Scotland in the near future, however if we do I will certainly contact you for the information.

It isn't manufactured as a midge repellent,but the forest workers are reputed to use it up here,and its reputation seems to have travelled the world.It's a very girly smell,but hubby uses it on the golf course ( I bet they talk about him in the club house ) :O) 😱)

Certainly beats being bitten by the little blighters.

Thanks for that info maureen. I was quite approx 30miles from carradale Small park at side of A83 and practially on the beach.Weather was very good hence the midges. I admire Lord B going to carradale, the road from Campbeltown is horrible, even solo, hairpin bends with 14 degree gradients with the possibility of meeting a fully laden timber lorry. Carradale itself is lovely but I wouldn't be brave enough to attempt visiting with a van behind me. Look forward to hearing how he got on. Thanks again.

Hi all

Lord B will require a bee keepers outfit whilst at Carradale bay

the midges where out in force 13th May met a neighbour at

Blair Drummond who had just come down from there ,his poor wife was covered in bites.

With regards to the roads as directed by the caravan club, he came back via B879 B842 reckon the road has plenty of passing places and notso bad as the A83.

I work for a Electricity company covering the highlands and Islands of Scotland and our linesmen have just about tested every repellent on the market.

We all now use the Avon skin so soft
 
Hi folks

Living in the west coast of Scotland I have been to many places where the Midges are horrendous. I have been in the middle of a forest some years ago watching a rally and we had tried just about everything other than burning the place down.

We tried Avon, Boots own make and many other products but nothing would get rid of them. One guy suggested we try 'Shoo', so we did and what a difference. I have been to Greece and many other countries and 'Shoo' has worked with Mosquitoes as well.

If you read where the stuff was developed you will understand why it works.

Trust me this stuff works. We use our van throughout summer in Scotland and we always make sure we have plenty of 'Shoo' in the van.

I live 20 miles south of Glasgow, just down the coast.

Ken I managed to find it in fishing shops, well certainly here in Scotland.

I will have a look around here to see if there are any dealers. Maybe I could be an agent for 'Shoo'.

I am actually going away tomorrow for the weekend but I will try to find suppliers of it.

sorry folks,living west coast of scotland for years,near oban,do loads of hill walking,you dont get them high up in the munros by the way but its murder pitching an awning there...anyway only one cure for midges ice and snow,so afraid until about october we,ll be plagued by the wee beastie
 
Hi all, I've only just seen this post started by William, probably because at the time I was at Carradale.

Regarding the Avon, my wife sells it to ladies who have hubbies in the S.A.S. for when they are posted abroad. When in Oban I mentioned the midges to a lady in a shop by the harbour. She told me the fishermen also use Avon. Avon told my wife that they can't advertise it as a protection for midges because it hasn't been tested or licenced for that. Well I also used it at Carradale and it didn't stop the little chits trying to eat me alive.

Driving to Carradale I followed the C.C. advice and went down the west side of the peninsula on the A83 to Campeltown. It took me 6 1/2 hours from Englethwaite Hall. Between Campbeltown and Carradale there are about 4 steep hills with hairpin bends but they were downhill. I have to admit and concur with Her Ladyship, who was terrified of towing back the way we came, that they were steep and to climb the one I would need to take it wide. After 9 days of Her Ladyship giving me quadrophonic flak we decided to have a dry run along the B842/B8001 single track road. The night before leaving a chap arrived towing a T/A Abbey with a Jeep and he said it wasn't too bad coming that way and he only met 4 cars. With this in mind we left very early in the morning and with the exception of getting caught behind a herd of cows going for milking we had no problems.

A long drive to get to Carradale but the view from the caravan and the beach made it worth it if you can put up with those biting little chits. Her Ladyship never gets bitten but I tell her they don't go for bad meat.

On the enclosed pic of the beach you can just see the caravan site in the background.



 
Lord B, as you already know that eating marmite does not stop me being savaged.

Cannot remember where I heard this info, but it depends on what type of B O you transmit that causes the midges to home in .

You must not smell like a male midge !!!!!!

Ahhh so that's where you are going wrong Royston. You are not supposed to eat the Marmite, you are supposed to smear it over your exposed stick and the bu**ers get stuck. Once covered with trapped dead midges, rinse off and reapply :O) hehheh!
