On returning from Scotland today (not with caravan) and travelling down the A1 just south of Durham, I was faced with a scene that I never want to see again. The traffic started to slow down and it wasn't long before the reason for the hold up was revealed. A caravan with tow car was parked on the nearside and partly hiding the horror! As we got nearer, we could see a twin wheel base caravan on its roof and half the size it should have been! The towcar, a people carrier of some description had been jerked around and was blocking the inside lane. Fortunately, it did not look damaged, the caravan however, was literally smashed beyond recognition! But the saddest sight of all was a couple, who had obviously been the proud owners, standing on the verge and she was sobbing into his chest while he looked haunted and was trying to comfort her. It's times like that that most of us try not to think about because the shock and horror of it is too great. I can't imagine how they felt!! I wondered if it was the beginning of their holiday or the end? would it have made any difference? No, I don't think so. My heart went out to them as their possessions lay all over the road and verge. Was it speed? was it just a mechanical fault? I will never know, but what I do know is this. It will make me aware even more, of the importance of doubling my concentration when towing. I never want to see any of my caravanning colleagues in that situation again. DRIVE CAREFULLY AND WATCH THE SPEEDO!

We were going along the M4 just passed the toll bridge the other week ,we was doing just 60 MPH ,and we pulled into the middle lane as the inside lane was going off the M4 a bit further up ,the sun was shining visibility was good ,then a people carrier started to overtake in the ouside lane ,as the middle of the overtaking car reached my front ,he started pulling in forcing me to swerve to the inside lane ,it must have been sheer luck that nothing was on the inside lane ,it was stupid of me to swerve in like that but it was just quick reaction to avoid a collision ,but that lunatic just drove on like nothing had happened ,did he do it purpose ,was he asleep ,or was he drunk ,i will never know ,but its not allways the person who had the accident who is at fault ,but had i not been towing i would have caught him up and made sure he got what he deserved

Hi Joby, Yes, I agree completely. It's not certain that it was the van owners fault and I guess at the end of the day whoevers fault it was his van was smashed to pieces. These people like the cretin in the people carrier (hope I can say that and this is not taken off!) have never towed and therefore are completely ignorant of the testing time caravan towers are going through on the road. Thank God you came through unscathed!
