Thetford Aqua Rinse - 'Black Bits'

I've seen this mentioned on a number of forums before, but have yet to see an reasonable explanation for it or solution to it.

When I flush, having used Thetford Aqua Rinse I get 'black bits' - like tea leaves - in the flush water. Is this algae??? I don't see how it should/could be, given that one of Aqua Rinses purposes is to eliminate algae growth?? Any ideas???

You're right, it is algae. Maybe you don't use it every time. Maybe you don't mix it sufficiently strong. Maybe the growth occurs during the storage times.

I had this problem on my previous Swift Challenger 490. After the van flush reservoir was drained down for the winter, the algae dried out and ended up blocking the electric flush pump when the van was used again in the spring. After dismantling the (bench type) toilet I decided the fill the water tank with some warm water mixed with some bleach. After leaving for a few hours and after stirring up the contents as best I could, most of the algae came out through the drainage tube. I then just kept flushing with fresh water until the algae stopped coming out. The problem didn't occur again for a long time and I always try to use a good dose of Aqua Rinse these days

I got black bits in the flush water when I used Aqua Kem pink solution in the tank.

When I changed to Elsan pink fluid, the black bits stopped.

I also had the " black bits problem " with Aqua rinse.

For the past 2 years approx. i have used Elsan Pink with no black bits during this time.

I spoke to Thetford a few years ago when this first appeared and they stated that the Pink formula hadnt changed so why the algea had appeared had them baffled,but a point noted was the plastic filler flap was now more transparent (thinner or cheaper plastic) an was allowing more light through.

They gave me a header tank cleaner which seemed to get rid of it.

I also had this problem 2 years ago. I believe also that at the end of the season the tank needs to be rinsed out well with clean water and thoroughly drained. it took me most of the following season before the black bit ceased.
