Thetford Loo Freezing

Hi All

Following on from the Aquaroll thread. I have emptied the flush tank of the toilet for storage, but what about when out and about in winter ??. Overnight should be OK but when we go out for the day, and the van cools down, should the tank be empty ??

Val & Frank

I know I could leave the heating on (but not very green)

Well you certainly won't get a tennis ball in the flush tank... you could try a ping pong ball !!!!

If things are getting that cold and you have a guilt complex about using the heating system it's time to go home. When you get there though you'll probably find the pipes have frozen because you did'nt leave the central heating on low.

Hi,

the Elsan or Thetford Blue wil reduce the freezing temperature somewhat and so do the 'contents'. We hav enot had any problems during winter camping and I belive that you can buy a winter antifreeze if you are going somewhere such as Scotland/Germany.

Frank, I would definitely leave the heating on. It will probably take less energy to keep the 'van comfortable by leaving the heating on than heating it up from cold every day when you return from an outing. It was minus 16 overnight at the Invercauld, Braemar three yrs ago and it only warmed up to minus 10 during the day! Needless to say, we had the heating on 24/7.

DEAR ALL YOUR TOILET WILL NOT FREEZE -WHY,BECAUSE THE INGRIENT THAT THEY PUT IN THE CHEMICAL FLUID IS THE SAME THAT THEY USE IN EMBALMING FLIUD .

Now then not wishing to put folks off their sausage and mash with onion gravey.

Methane gas in small quantities is produced and along with the chemical in the tank a natural bio degrading reaction takes place which generates heat as a by product.

Also your waste tank is situated on the inside of the caravan which will if being used have a temperature above freezing anyway.

If however you are storing the van over winter (cos your too frightened of jack frost) then draining the tanks (foul and flush)is a must.

Anyway on a lighter note, you could always call a sluge gulping firm I saw once many years ago in London. R Crapper and sons!!

Steve.

Frank - leave the heating on, at a low thermostatic setting. It'll stop the interior freezing and reduce the energy required to heat up when you come back each day.

Dave - most toilet fluid manufacturers have stopped using formaldehyde in chemicals because it's toxic, cancerous and environmentally damaging. It's been banned most parts of Europe for some time.
