Thought caravans were for pensioners!

We woke up one September morning to find our tent surrounded by water. The touring caravan occupants opposite were sniggering at us as we rolled up our jeans paddled about getting all the equipment back into the car. I would have gladly took the lot to the tip, however we had only borrowed it off my Jon's daughter, so we had to get it home, dried out and back into its cover. We both vowed never again will we be going camping!

The following weekend we decided to take a look at these touring caravans at our local dealership Broalane Leisure at Alcester Warwickshire. It was my Jon who termed the phrase caravaning is for pensioners, not me, however as he said it loudly my young friend and her three young boys came bounding round the corner icecreams in hand ... shouting no silly we are only 32 and we've been caravaning for years .. what a daft thing to say we have great fun!

Well we went back quite a few weekends deciding on the caravan and finally purchased a Swift Charisma 4 berth fixed bed all the latest features, last June 2009. We had full instruction from the staff for over an hour and more if we needed.

We have never looked back and we certainly wont be so prejudice in saying its just for pensioners.Infact we are now esceedingly jealous of our retired friends, as they can stay away for longer and have more adventurous trips! Roll on retirement!

We are going to try towing in France in May, we have a very cheap ferry crossing Dover Dunkerque and are hoping for some ideas for sites in and around that area or even Belgium.

Best wishes

Jon and Racheal

Hi Jon & Racheal, welcome to the forum and to the pensioners hobby.

I'm only kidding, caravanning is an ideal way for people of all ages to get out of the rat race for a while.

We've just come back from a rally with a large number of young families enjoying the countryside and spending time together.

Us oldies have been trying to keep caravanning a secret for years and we bribe Jeremy Clarkson and his pals to tell everybody that caravans are horrible and for just for pensioners so that we have more pitches available for ourselves :0)

Rachael,

Look on the camping cheque website. It's worth buying their sites directory and map. We have been using them for years. Loads of sites in Belgium.

my hubby and I bought our first van when I was 25 and he 29 :) i'm 29 now and we've just upgraded the van, we now have a son too and I'm pleased to say we'll bring him up in caravan sites up and down the country, Sooo much better than holidaying in hotels in benidorm or wherever where all you see is the sea and british holiday makers getting drunk on Lager, No our kids will be seeing the countryside from the thick of it feeling the grass between his toes, watching the wildlife, playing on bikes and scooters with friends he's made.

I wish we had one as kids.

Not knocking the odd benidorm/lager holiday, if thats what your into. :)

You're doing right by your kids Donna.

Regarding Benidorm if it wasn't for the booze and sun half the people wouldn't bother to go there.

When there they learn nothing about the culture of the country except, unlike home, the Spanish breed plastic donkey's that wear big hats. They don't even enjoy the countryside inbetween Blighty and their destination except from the airport to the hotel.

Your children will learn far more and have a greater experience.

Racheal, put any questions you have regarding your trip to France under Overseas parks & touring.

I'm sure you will get more replies because not everyone looks at New Members.

Hi Guys,

I am 29, my wife 28 and our daughter is 2. We are in our 4th year of caravanning (spent every holiday as a kid in one!) and love it now more than ever.

Happy Vanning!
