I have recently had a pair of Timberland Nubuck boots resoled and heeled at Timpsons. They were not done at our local Timpsons but were sent away to a repair center. My wife has had a pair of hers done twice now so I felt I could trust mine to Timpsons too.

Must say they have done a top class job and the soles are Vibram too. Also the uppers have been rejuvenated and look better than when they went in. Very pleased with the outcome plus I don’t need to break in a new pair of leather boots.

I like Timpsons as they give work opportunities to members of society who by many norms are excluded. Plus the founder and his wife Sir John and Alex Timpson strongly supported fostering of children having fostered 90 and adopted 2. Through the Alex TimpsonTrust they set up the charity the help disadvantaged children. Nice to support a company that puts something back in to society.

Many years ago when we lived in Cardiff just down the road was a genuine shoemaker. He repaired my shoes that were very scuffed etc to look like new and he was not expensive. I had to wait about 2 weeks but it was worth the wait.

I had never been in a Timpsons, but needing two additional sets of three basic cylinder lock keys making we went into one piggy backed on the Sainsburys at Hedge End, just this Thursday.

To cut a long story short, with the "benefit" of their multi item discounts that would be £56, and would take about an hour.

Gob smacked at nearly £10 a key for the discounted deal, I drove over to Screwfix, where they wanted £28 for the two x three, and offered to have them done in 15 minutes. Took that option, they were there done and all now tested and working.

Timpsons may well be good but in this case at a very excessive price, IMO.

For info:
Screwfix used a digitally based machine that scanned the keys, something new to me. The young lady said they have nearly zero keys returned as not right, but if I needed they would redo them FOC.
The milling of the cuts was of a very high quality machining.

When we moved house we had extra keys cut using a machine in B&Q and those came out excellent. Probably same machine as a Screwfix as they are the same grouping.

Altberg boots…. I still have a pair of motorcycle touring boots that I bought at a bike show at Beaulieu in 2001…. Comfortable enough to walk in all day, and I have ridden over one hundred thousand miles in them over 20 years without issue, and had them resoled by Altberg in 2014 - they did an excellent job.
My riding mate Andy was so impressed that he also bought a pair and we rode up from Oxon and Leicestershire respectively ( meeting up along the way) one very crisp October day, and back down again the same afternoon. A cracking day out on the bikes ( me on a BMW 1200RT and Andy on his BMW 1150RT).
His bike… he cleaned it once a year, and his philosophy was that it got an annual clean “whether it was needed or not”.

Happy days

Steve
