How about using a low voltage de-humidifier?.
These days they are super efficient, and can be adjusted to be "just" removing moisture.
Just an idea and prepared to be shot down!

Not that I support dehumidifier but wouldn't you just be better off with a fan to keep air moving. Although I wouldn't use one myself. Never had a problem with mildew or condensation in any caravan. Although when they are ready for winter the juxtaposition of the seats resembles an explosion in an upholstery factory.

Think he took umbrage at being told trying to keep his caravan dry by using drying crystals didn't work, particularly when some one mentioned Science of Stupid.

Hang on a mo guys.
Reference was merely made to a National Geographic programme called "Science of Stupid". A real scientific show that sets out to dispel commonal garden myths and old wives tales.
Can't say I found the comments a personal attack B)

Sounds like a good programme. Must try and catch it sometime :cheer:

I couldn't see anyone had said anything wrong at all. Not our fault if people ask advice and don't like the answers or useful information to back the advice up.

Hey ho onwards and upwards we'll all keep smiling and keep the banter rolling off the keyboards. :cheer:

When you take a beer can from the fridge, it is instantly covered in condensation. This holds good until the air temperature drops below freezing - when the air is to all intents dry.

The way to avoid condensation, is to allow the surface temperature to follow the current local air temperature by a few degrees.

In places like Singapore both the air temperature and humidity are high, there with temperatures above 30C condensation will form in the upper twenties.

Look at any dealers site, all the van doors are usually open to keep them dry.

Vans left to themselves stay dry. We put water vapour into them, by breathing, sweating, cooking, washing, drying.

Having watched this thread I can see how Blwch may well have taken umbridge at the comments that included the word 'stupid', even though it was part of a quote. :(

I doubt that any apologies on this site will be seen as I really do think Blwch has left the building.

hi Prof.
if people are so sensitive and thin skinned to the extent that they think a single word taken out of context in a reply is a direct insult "so be it" it wasn't supposed to be but hey that's life.
it is a bit like someone complaining of being assaulted because someone else grabs the their arm and pulls them back so they don't get run over by that big bus they hadn't seen.
as for the program you all should watch it sometime. it is hosted by Richard Hammond [now there is irony] it explains the science behind getting it wrong. then shows clips of the unfortunate who ignore or don't understand the science involved in getting it right.

myself I thought the parallels between the program and the belief that a caravan can be kept dry by adding some sort of moisture management worth mentioning. nothing more nothing less. we all [well most] know this to be pointless and to attempt to is well *** [put any word you like in the box]. as some wouldn't like the proper one.

edit, just to add years ago [about 30] I saw my dad putting salt in the van [mine it was being kept at his place at the time] "what are you doing" well the salt absorbs the moisture and keeps the van dry. "no dad it doesn't" well he said the vans dry isn't it. so I changed the salt for a dish of sand month later van was still bone dry. Nuff said.

Well Colin that is basically it.

It is all too easy to be thinking something and then write it down as per thought, without realising what just been written can be misconstrued. Unlike face to face communications, where we use gestures facial expressions and vocal dynamics to apply an emphasis whats actually said, its nigh on impossible to provide the same additional clues to a reader using just the same actual words.

Iv'e been guilty of it in the past. I'm a little more careful these days but some fopars still get through sometimes.

Is there an "idiots guide" to keeping the caravan dry anywhere?

Ventilation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :p
and buy one that doesn't leak and is dry to start with.

John. that may be true mate to some extent but if you read a joke book does that mean you never get the punch line because there is no comic to deliver it. :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

What does it matter if someone wants to put a cover on or not, it just takes a bit of effort to put one on and that is the reason why people can't be bothered, my top cover top keeps all that snow and wet weather out of all those mastic seams around the fan lights and awning rail seams,

Store it indoors and only take it out when the forecast is 100% dry for several days !!!

Now that's an unfair comparison, If you know your are writing a book, most people will adjust their language or be advised to do so by a publisher. You also invariable have time to set the scene or context around a remark And generally the reader will know its supposed to be comic book  and will have a mind frame to look for the humour.

All i'd ask is when adding a comment to a thread, to bear in mind that readers can't see what you might be intending, so they are not preconditioned to make allowances for remarks that might cause offence.

The facts are that one poster inferred that another poster was stupid which was ill advised and completely unnecessary.

The science is simple ........... ridicule is pointless on a forum and reflects badly on the perpetrator.

Some people just can't grasp simple principles.

No face. No voice. No body :(
What chance do we have
Take all comments on the spirit they are given.
After all. We are all caravanners :cheer: B)

Sorry Bill that isn't true. nobody inferred anything of the sort merely drew conclusions based on facts.
both you and I and the vast majority of caravan owners know that trying to keep a van dry while it is not being used by the use of moisture absorbing materials and or machines is a waste of time. illogical. pointless. and has no scientific basis whatsoever. the belief that it does because the van appears to be dry when in fact it would still be dry if you did nothing at all just kept the ventilation grills open. seems well. "stupid" to me. when all the evidence to the contrary is clear cut, obvious. and beyond doubt.
now if someone reading the explanation of the facts assumes it is some kind of ridicule on them when no such inference was made. then that is a problem for the reader. not the author. how many posts have started on this forum with the words "this is probably a stupid question but" are we to erase the word because someone may be offended of course not.
if the odd person is so sensitive to think that a reply is aimed directly at them when one is merely stating the obvious in general terms then that is their issue. I have no problem with that. sorry.

Unfortunately I've been out of the loop recently due to ongoing computer problems and domestic chores so I had missed the perceived downhill trajectory of this thread which has resulted in the departure of a relatively new forum member.
Many forum users have become used to the witty repartee and the cut and thrust of internet discussion because they are long term members, but it might help us all if we bear in mind that some people are more easily upset than others.
It's very easy to misconstrue sincerely offered advice given through the medium of text and Bwlch only had a total of 22 comments before he left so perhaps he felt that he was being personally insulted when there was no insult intended.
If any forum member feels upset or insulted by forum comments my moderator email contact is on my signature, and I'm always happy to try to deal with issues and to pour oil on stormy waters.

I'm with Bwlch who came on this forum and has only posted 22 times........he only asked a simple question about caravan covers.

He thought he had been called stupid during a lecture on desiccants....and I can see why he would think that.

PS......Sorry to tread on Parksy's toes as we typed at about the same time.
My post was meant to be before the moderators.

Parky,
You have just summed it up this site belongs to Hezza and his magazine empire and not the long standing clique that seem to exist on here and rubbish new posters just for asking a question that might have been asked a million times before when Adam was a lad, in saying that the advise that is given for FREE and is first class, I have just had a reply from Woodentop with reference to a satellite issue, not only that when a particular technical question is asked you get Damien and the Prof giving professional advised for free, but I think it would be courteous of responders to a question not call people Stupid,
