I think not!
I'm a user not a PC or internet expert, I may not have got the terminology quite right but I'm pretty well near the mark.
For a person now telling us that he's a bit of a forum IT specialist some of Nicks posts in this thread are a little disturbing
smiley-smile.gif

Reading through posts here some people might get the idea that using some of the services mentioned could lead to us being tracked to our front doors using an IP address. That doesn't happen.

I've set-up & looked after the technical side of many BBS/Forums over the years & they have almost always failed because the person who runs it acts like a little Hitler & keeps threatening to throw their toys out of the pram.
When discussing forums it comes down to what the forum is for, if it's run by an individual there's a good chance ego is going to come in to play. This forum is a business tool, the users here are just a tool of PC who only give what suits them and their budget and they don't even employ professional moderators. Parksy and Damian do their best but a company such as Haymarket should be paying pro's to do the job and PC should be running an all Bells and Whistles forum engine and internet service for caravanner's as they do claim to be market leaders

Jonny, you have absolutely nothing to worry about, we didn't fall out, there was no big drama (well, apart from some Latin-style arm-waving and hot air

5. IP or ISP. Internet Provider or Internet Service Provider.
IP is Internet Protocol
A modem can have a fixed IP address or offer variable IP address settings so your IP address changes. ISP modems usually have a fixed IP address.
A modem can USE either a fixed or variable but it's the ISP who determines which, most UK ISP's use fixed.
If you buy a more advanced modem they can also provide other blocking technology
Every modem made in the last 5 years, including, at least, the last 3 generations of BT supplied modem/routers, has had NAT blocking but that just stops someone entering your computer or network from 'the outside', nothing to do with spam or do you mean something else ?
and you can buy IP masking programs.
Yes &/or proxy servers but most people don't, they go along in blissful ignorance about what information is being gathered about their browsing/buying habits, but then people use store loyalty cards & believe me they are not for the customers benefit
Reading through posts here some people might get the idea that using some of the services mentioned could lead to us being tracked to our front doors using an IP address. That doesn't happen.
See http://whatismyipaddress.com/geolocation-accuracy, not front door but general area or town, good enough for marketing purposes.
Also if someone like Gallant Macmillan or ACS law think you have violated someones copyright, they can demand your physical address from your ISP based upon your IP address.
Peter Mandleson's 'Digital Economy Bill' will only make logging worse & access to your information easier.

Nick. You obviously think you understand more than you do, if you took a little more time reading posts rather than posting back more spin and myths you would do better.
If we used BT's equipment we would have a fixed IP address.
We don't, so we DO NOT have a fixed IP address via BT and get less problems.
The police can't even get all the information they want when requesting a physical address from an IP address. ISP's and Google and other mail providers do not hand out the information as easily as you seem to think.
Government Spooks and Law is in a different position to internet Scammers and Sales outfits trying to make shady

My IP address never even shows the county I live in, so good luck to the mail shot people.

And I think enough arguing has taken place over this , and it is starting to get personal.
So, I think it is time both warring parties gave it a rest or it will get a permanent rest in the discard bin.

Rather than go in for personal insults, I'll just say that statement is wrong, it's got nothing to do with the modem, it's what the ISP uses, BTInternet uses fixed for Business users & variable for home users now.

It's not sales outfits making a shady living, why do you think FaceBook is worth so much ?, it isn't the money they receive from displaying click-through adverts.

You are not typical, from the last weeks stats for a club who's site I manage, the club is based between Stafford & Wolverhampton & the visitors are from exactly where I would expect,
Stoke on Trent 6
Birmingham 5
Wolverhampton 3
Willenhall 3
Stafford 2
Kidsgrove 2
Lichfield 2
Sutton Coldfield 2
Newcastle under Lyme 2

Nick's posts are very misleading with bad information with a half tale, then he throws in links to prove a point only for them to say what I've said! I think he must be sampling a little to much grape juice in France.
Whatever he says about tracing an IP address more or less to your front door is tripe at best unless there is some legal reason for the authorities, even his link says that Sky were at fault! Some of the computer and Internet people we've worked with have actually come from working with European Governments security services at the highest levels on internet, computer and digital radio and telephone security. I'm not an expert but I know baloney.
Most of the internet users we know and have worked with can't be traced by most to anywhere near where they live whatever Nick might care to believe

Please take the thread out Parksy or Damian as our friend in France is only spreading scary general nonsense that could disturb some internet users on the forum.

What is it about Damian's post more or less telling you two to shut up you don't understand?
The pair of you have completely hijacked this thread with a load of baloney about stuff that most of us aren't bothered about anyway.

The point of this thread was to ask about the provision of PMs on THIS FORUM - not Facebook/Twitter/Skype or any of that - and thanks to you two it will now probably get chucked in the bin.

HAYMARKET - PLEASE GIVE US PMs SO THE LIKES OF THOSE TWO ABOVE CAN ARGUE TO THEIR HEART'S CONTENT OFF THE BOARDS!!!
(and yes I'm shouting out of sheer frustration
smiley-yell.gif
)

Oh, and the only thing that 'disturbs' me Sadie is having to skate over yours and Nick's 'general nonsense' to see if there are any more genuinely interesting and pertinent posts in a thread which I'm particularly interested in. Mainly posts from Haymarket which are as yet completely lacking!

BRILLIANT Section.
I've learnt much
smiley-cool.gif
According to my IP address I live about 4 counties away and over 230 miles from my home
smiley-smile.gif

and the last email I received from a mate in a Cambridgeshire village came from Texas
smiley-smile.gif

accoding to Nick my IP address is set by my ISP but within 10 minutes I'd found how I can change it as often as I like
smiley-smile.gif

And there's more
smiley-laughing.gif
according tto US Government answers to a senate committee question on worlwide internet security
"Determining any physical location down to a city or ZIIP (post)code, is difficult and not accurate as there are no official sources for the information, sometimes users share IP addresses and ISP often base IP addresses in a city where their company bases internet operations"

Sadie and Nick are never going to agree and most of the rest of us have completely lost interest in whether or not the evil geniuses or assorted spam merchants of the internet can harvest personal information about those who use social networking sites. Members must make up their own minds.
Internet disagreements are a bit like sex aren't they? Great and exciting for those participating but useless for those of us who are mere spectators
rolleyes.gif

The topic centered around a legitimate request from members for a forum based personal messaging facility but unfortunately this request is rapidly becoming devalued because of this ongoing disagreement which is off topic anyway.
I don't want to have to lock this topic or start to take posts down so would those concerned please agree to disagree, open their own topic or email each other? (I am happy to forward email addys on request) The discussion can't continue to hijack this topic.
For those interested in the original point of the topic I emailed Haymarket technical staff on Monday morning to bring this topic to their attention and to give them the opportunity to add information one way or another. Unfortunately so far I have received no reply or acknowledgement of the email so members should draw their own conclusions because I have no further information to add.

To be honest if I followed the advice given on forums like this regarding internet safety I'd be too paranoid to use it. Thankfully I'm not. It all boils down to commonsense. I've used the net thousands of times in searches for products, hundreds of times buying online and also selling through e-Bay yet I've never been fiddled, no viruses and hardly any spam because most get stopped by my ISP. We bank online paying for goods either through MasterCard or PayPal all without problems. I've been doing this since about 1995 so don't intend to stop now. Even GoogleMail is efficient at stopping spam which is hardly a good thing, if as some believe, some of it originates from them.
I do know people who are actually scared of using the internet because of all the scare stories put around. I do my best to instill confidence in them but with one friend I've failed totally and have now given up. Sad really.

If Mods can't even get a reply to their emails from their 'bosses' at Haymarket, what chance have us mere mortals got of getting any anwers to our queries? Sorry, but that's disgraceful.

I tried to be interested, but woke up hours later with a sore neck.
Great reading for insomniacs.
I have similar experiences to LB in having used and use the net for banking, buying and searching, never had a problem.
I was going to go out but then thought maybe my mobile phone may give my location away and I MAY get a lazer guided bomb drop on me......ah well,.such excitement.

Oh,and Sue,,the DVDs were due back yesterday,,,,,lol
