DON'T use bleach !!

There's a wide selection of fluids around that are specifically made for chemical toilets:-

Thetford

Elsan

Fenwicks

BioMagic

You don't say how old your daughter is - don't put disposable nappies in the caravan toilet or the site emptying point - the go into the refuse bins.

Dissolvable toilet tissue MUST be used otherwise the internal mechanism gets clogged. The toilet manufacturers recommend their own brands but many use ordinary supermarket tissue. Avoid Charmin.

Hi roger, she isn't in nappies, and i'd never do that anyway - don't worry!!! I just wondered if i could use any brand of chemical and i shall definately not use bleach. I don't use charmin anyway. Would a cheaper brand from the supermarket be better, you know the thin stuff that's not as good as andrex?

As far as toilet chemicals are concerned there are many proprietary brands in caravan accessory shops or Halfords.

In the top (flush water) tank many caravanners use pink fluid and Blue for the bottom (waste holding tank) Try to get fluid that doesn't contain formaldehyde if you want to be kind to the environment. Many caravan accessory shops do own brand fluid as well but I can't tell you much about them because I havent tried them.

At the moment we're using thetfords own make of biodegradeable toilet paper because we got some on special offer from Halfords

But normally we just use Tescos or Asdas own brand bum fodder with no problems.

If your caravan is new there is often a small sample pack of toilet chemical in a recess under the holding tank and the salesman should run through everything involving your caravan with you before you accept it. As Roger has said, dont use bleach.

Herself uses a product called Fendox cleaner to spray the plastic surfaces such as the toilet bowl and wash basin, again this is available from caravan accessory shops.

Good Luck with the new caravan, enjoy!

You're doing exactly the right thing by asking questions on here before you collect your caravan.

Hi Sparkle , I like all the comments above , and have to admit I have tried loads of different things for the toilet.

Elsan Thetford Fenwicks Dealers own but who knows what is in the dealers own bottles.

Fenwicks is mentioned on here and they do one called Top and Tail thats the same fluid for flush and cassette thus carry one bottle .

The choice is yours

Regards .Sir Roger Ps enjoy your caravan

I've just bought the blue" teabag" things that Elsan do - thought it might stop the old man tipping half a bottle of blue chemical in the loo cos he can't be bothered to measure it out - anyone else tried them and how did you get on with them?

We regularly use the Thetford "tea bags" and find them to be very good. Easy to use, lighterweight to carry than fluids, and nothing to leak or spill.

Most chemicals hide the unpleasant smells and there is the chemical smell in the bathroom- not unpleasant. To avoid that try the new chemicals, Biomagic or Elsan Organic. Use the same in both top and bottom tank. These have a chemical in them that makes the bacteria grow and dissolve the waste. They also contain an oxidiser so there is no unpleasant smell. Not suitable if you only use the loo for pees- there are no bacteria in it.

Chri whilst I can't comment on the products you mention there is certainly plenty of bacteria in urine.

we tried some 'Green' stuff from canal place that uses bacteria growth to get rid of smells but gone back to Elsan we try to empty container complete with solid brown bits after shower, whatever toilet paper we use seems to break up OK then put some blue liquid in with a little water it seems to need a few days for bacteria to work.We also wash everything over with the shower hose and wipe it off with kitchen roll (have allin one loo and shower in Indiana)

Slowcoach, Again sorry to corect you. But urine is sterile and only carries bacteria if you have a kidney infection or if it is picked up through external contact.

Back on topic, We have just finished using the last of our Thetford toilet flush fluid and are going to try the elsan organic fluid. We have not had any problen using Thetford but it will be nice not to worry about two different bottles and when they run out. Using one fluid will hopefully stop any worry of running out. At the moment I use the sample bottles supplied with the new van to fill up the two parts and when the big bottle runs out I know I have one last fill up before we run out completely.

Wek before last we spent 10 days at Low Moor Whitby, no toilet blocks.

This gave me an excellent opportunity to compare Thetford Blue with Elsan Blue.

They both worked very well but I must say the Elsan worked more quickly and was better at disolving solids. Points out of 10, I'd say 8 Thetford , 9 Elsan.

I think Elsan contains formaldehyde which helps in the breaking down of solids. Thetford which is made in Belgium ( or is it Holland) has no formaldehyde due to an EU ruling.

I also noticed the Elsan pink was far more effective at keeping back the black algae in the flush tank.

Alan, Elsan Blue is 25% formaldehyde, Thetford Blue being formaldehyde-free.

Elsan Blue will kill anything! I don't want to see formaldehyde until they put me in my box!

Roger

Is that why the Elsan is so good?

Is formaldehyde dangerous?

OMG I got some on my hands last week!!

Cheers

Formaldehyde is banned in toilet fluids across most of Europe, the UK being one of the exceptions. It's toxic when swallowed, harmful to wildlife and plants and is a known cause of cancer.

Spillages on caravan sites can be fatal to inquisitive pets.

It's use as a body preservative is well known and those working in the undertaking industry are well regulated by the Health & Safety Executive.

Formaldehyde is no longer used in cavity wall insulation products because of it's risks.

Elsan Blue is the only branded toilet chemical still using formaldehyde - it may also be present in some dealer own label products - all the Thetford products have been reformulated without it for some years, including Thetford Blue. Fenwicks Top'n'Tail and BioMagic have never contained it.
