I have not been a member of this forum for very long, however I have been towing most of my adult life (nearly 30 years since passing my car test) and I have picked up a fair bit of experience in that time.

As a teenager I started out towing a heavy home made trailer, full of heavy diving and camping equipment on the back of a 1.0 litre Vauxhall Nova and couldn't understand why there was no traction at the front wheels and why it would barely pull away from junctions without spinning the front wheels.

A year later, when a friends tow car broke down, rather than cancel our planned dive, I offered to tow his RIB (boat) to the coast, during which time I experienced my first (and thankfully last) snake.

My friend's advice at that time was to accelerate out of the snake, which as well as being wrong, was not possible as my car didn't have the power left to do that.

More out of fright and good luck than anything else, I eased off and gently slowed down enough for the snaking to stop and lived to tell the tale.

We did not have access to computer sites such as this and I had never heard of Caravan or Camping Clubs, so everything I learnt about safe towing weights and nose weights etc., was pretty much the hard way and over the years I have become a much more responsible and safer driver.

These days, having progressed to much more powerful cars and towing big twin axle vans, I try to be safe and responsible in all aspects of my driving/towing and I'm happy to share my experience in forums such as this.

I am fortunate that my employer put me through an advanced driving course 10 years ago and I retain that status with 3 yearly advanced refresher courses.

I am still learning and would never consider myself to be so experienced that I could afford to become complacent.

I thoroughly enjoy reading other people's opinions and whether I agree with those opinions or not, doesn't matter to me.

If I feel I can make a valued contribution, I am at liberty to do so and on other matters where I may consider myself as 'not experienced enough' to make a valued contribution, I don't offer comment.

I have picked up an awful about caravanning simply by reading through the questions and responses in this excellent forum, however it seems as if some members feel they have to make comment, whether they are experienced on a subject or not and some of the discussions now seem to be personal competitions to win an argument, rather than addressing the question posed in the first place.

This atmosphere is not conducive to newer or less experienced members contributing to the discussions at hand and in fact, is likely to deter them from sharing their experiences, fearing their opinions will be openly shot down.

This will eventually lead to the discussions being biased in favour of the more vociferous members' personal opinions, rather than providing a broader picture of members' views, where as adults, we can read and form our own opinions on a subject.

I feel that the site would be much more open and richer in an atmosphere where we can all share and build on our experiences, rather than starting arguments over who's opinion and ego's are most important and who expresses those opinions loudest.

Just a thought...waiting to be shot down !

Well said, Ken. I think you'll find that most of us on here will agree with you, but, unfortunately, there will always be the odd one who loves to pick an argument. The best way forward is to simply ignore them, but I know that's not always easy.

Ken - your comments have hit the nail rair and square regarding attitudes of certain forum members.

Your posting also brought back my memories of my only "snake". A 2 litre Austin Montego towing a Marden Classic on the M5. Four adults and one child in car and going down hill on M5 the other side of Bristol - a lorry overtook and started the snake whilst I was doing 50mph. I was advised previously in work by a colleague to accelerate out of a snake but then thought what the heck speed would I be doing by the time I got to the bottom of the hill. I eased off the accelerator and let the car go on its own down hill - didn't touch the brake in case of further snaking. Eventually reached bottom of hill with heart in mouth and eventually pulled out of the snake - first and only snake I have experienced but by God did it frighten me.

Ken, I think your comment "starting arguments over who's opinion and ego's are most important", ego's being the operative word, after all, we all know people in the real world like this so why shouldn't they be in cyberspace too ;O).

It was through forums like this that I learned about my experience a week ago. Travelling along the A449 near Newport I caught up with a car transporter and all of a sudden my outfit became unstable. It was at this point that I recalled others warning about car transporters and their unusual airflow. I just eased off and all was O.K. Luckily I was only one mile away from the M4 and he went the other way.

The only other time I've experienced this was on the A9 in Scotland and the same thing happened. I eased back and then moved into the outside lane and overtook it that way without problems, it seems that the problem starts when you are immediately behind.

Thankfully it's not everyday we come across car transporters.

Well said, Ken.

New to caravanning and towing late last year, I owe my thanks to the Internet and forums like this one for the vast amount of information and knowledge I have already picked up and I'm still learning all the time. I don't believe anyone can ever "know it all", there's always something new to learn.

And here's yet another example, thanks to Lord B. Not new exatly, I had already read about the risks of car transporters but I had forgotten!! So thanks for reminding me. I've never experienced a snaking yet (and hope I never do!) but I've only towed about 20 times to date.

It would be well worth taking part in a towing course that includes the correct way how to react if your oufit become unstable. Then you can get first hand experience how to get out of a deliberately induced snake. That takes away a lot of the fear and panic that is often associated with instability when you encounter it unprepared for the first time.

I was given advice some time ago regarding HGVs and busses passing. What I do if I see either one coming up in the rear view mirror I pull as close as possible to the offside white line of my lane without stradling it. This forces the lorry/bus further out in their lane. Just before they pass I then pull back to the nearside of my lane thereby creating a reasonable air gap between us. This certainly reduces the buffeting from the passing vehicle quite considerabley. Works for me OK.

With a lot of caravanning years behind us we wouldn't still be caravanning if we didn't enjoy it, BUT!

We've come across rude and indifferent dealers.

Indifferent and unhelpful caravan manufacturers staff and the same with the suppliers of caravan equipment.

Caravan site staff have been very good and helpful mainly, but then again we have met some unhelpful couldn't give a fig obnoxious twerps and jobs worth's. They include a few who have made untoward comment on our caravans and tow cars.

Fellow caravanner's on sites have been very good most of the time, but then again we've been given good and bad advice and at times when we never asked for it. We've had our Caravan's, Cars, Awnings and equipment choices come under fire. Everything from a remark about 'you'd think they could afford a new caravan if they drive that' to 'look at the size of that awning' and within our hearing range. We've also moved on from sites due to others who's attention is unwanted or to obtrusive.

Like many other caravanner's we've come across other caravanner's who have little respect for others cars and caravan's and personal space, the odd ball or Frizbee coming to close for comfort or to much noise intrusion. Followed by the evil looks if one dares to comment or ask another families child to take care.

I could also make similar comparisons about stays in hotels or shopping trips.

On the whole caravanning gives us what we want or we would have packed in long ago, advice forums are not that different to what you can experience on caravan sites or in everyday life sometimes.

Just pick out the bits you want and move on!

What is it with apostrophes?

I think there's a bug in this forum that messes up people's postings and inserts apostrophes where they shouldn't be.

Either that - or people don't understand how to use them.

Seems to be a confusion between plurals and the need for possessive apostrophes....

Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on your perspective, there are no rules governing the Internet. Yes, the Moderators try to keep things as civilised as possible, but that is never going to be 100% successful. I feel that if you wish to enter the 'kitchen' then be prepared for some 'heat'. After all, it is only words on a computer screen, they are not going to jump out and bite you (unless technology has progressed beyond my understanding). The advantage on anonymity is that people can say what they like, the things they would never say to your face. Yes, it is a cowardly way to approach things,, but that is the way of our new world.

Personally I ignore most things that are said on the various Forums, but do admit to a certain pleasure in occasionally throwing a 'stone into a pond' just to see what the ripples will produce. Take it as harmless, or do not participate. We are all adults........supposedly!

Why Mark?

I know that I'm not perfect and nor is my grammar or punctuation, were you not the one being critical in a section asking for tolerance.

Apart from my normal corrupted use of English, spelling and punctuation I had just got in to work from a direct flight from Turkey and a hectic partying weekend with very little sleep.

What was your excuse old boy? ;

imo it's rather rude to comment on the way that posters spell or use grammar when posting.

Surely the point of forums such as these is for the exchange of information and opinion from all spectrums of the caravanning public.

A poster who happened to be dyslexic or who had some physical disability which made typing difficult might feel inhibited from joining a discussion if they felt that someone was counting their apostrophe's and being critical of their grammar or spelling.

For most of my literary missive's I have my secretary to correct mistakes, should I also be asking her to edit forum posts before clicking the submit button Parksy?

I'm sure she wouldn't mind me calling at 23.45 pm, she's very tolerant ;
