Too Close for Comfort or Fire Regulations

We have just returned from six weeks in the Lakes, All the time we were away we used CL/CSs. What confounded me more than anything was the lack of consideration by a minority of other members using the CL/CSs.

Picture a one and a half acre lawned paddock; electric hook-ups located at regular well spaced points around the paddock; views fantastic from any spot . When we pulled on we were the only ones there. Found a spot we liked and paid for two weeks stay, plugged the electric in, put the kettle on and settled down.

After a couple of days rest staying at the caravan we decided to have a day out at Keswick. When we returned another two vans had pulled on. One in the far corner of the CS but the other one - well you would have thought he had moved his van into storage. I kid you not when I say that the side of this couple's caravan (no awning) was at the most ten feet away from the side of our van. I quietly spoke to the couple and suggested that in light of fire regulations and the site owners own request regarding a 20 foot rule did he not think he was a bit close to our caravan. The husband then paced out twenty feet from the side of our van ("no problem we have one of those mover things") and proceeded to move his van.

What were they thinking of. They had a huge paddock to park anywhere they liked so why oh why did they have to pitch so close to our van. Did they feel lonely? Did they live in a City and think everyone should live cheek by jowl?

The two vans moved on the next morning (still don't think his tow vehicle was adequate for the size of his van but that it another story - just hope they made it down the motorway).

OK gripe over.

PS Should mention that a motorhome did exactly the same thing on the next CL we visited.

Hi Linda

I think all of us at some time have experienced this annoyance.

There is a saying in Yorkshire -'Nowt so queer as folk'

However there is no logical explanation, could it be the 'herd' instinct?

Your problem is one we constantly have on our CL there is loads of room but as you found one gets set up and the next arrival is parked close by. We had one who mooved to the other end of the CL only to have the same thing happen next day. I think Mike's saying sums it up.

We have found something similar in car parks abroad. In our family it's known as "parking next to another Brit".
