Does anyone carry anything nowadays with the ease and accessibility of b&q/Screwfix/tool station and so on coupled with back up amenities restaurants/showers etc .

Seems as though anything but a few bits seems overkill when there are alternatives so most problems than could arrise

I'm with Mr Grumpy on this one you can never be too organised and ready to fix those things that break. Where we go there is no Screwfix or others. Bring it with you or you will be driving for hours to pick up that widget rubber washer or screw. as they say a stich in time.

I always carried a tool set plus repair materials like Emergency Tape,Duct tape epoxy putty, fuses, water pump, connectors /wire etc. Where we used to visit as said above Screwfix etc wasn’t t all that convenient. But you need to understand how to use the tools etc for them to be of any use. Or ask a neighbour if there is one.

Few years ago we were on the C&CC Festival of Lanterns rally.
Pitched just down from us was a local mobile caravan engineer who had used his work van as his tow car.
The number of jobs he was asked to perform over the weekend was mind boggling.

Isn't that the very definition of a busman's holiday. :giggle:

When on site I keep quiet , once my granddaughter let someone know and I got asked to 'look at all sorts , I had to tell politely tell them I'm on holiday just like you , here's my card if your ever in my area I 'll have a look , because strangely enough I don't carry my work stuff with me on holiday and I have left my magic wand at home as well :ROFLMAO: . I have a few tools and a multimeter and a set of spanners and a bottle jack and thats it -oh and an AA card!

As we no longer have a caravan, I no longer carry a toolbox in the back of the car. I actually miss not seeing it there and it feels as if something is missing! There is no way I would even think of attempting to do a roadside repair to a modern car as you cannot even access the engine!

I've been trying since 2000 to give up working on cars and let professionals do the work but just this week I had the front wheels off to reset their position and retorque their bolts, completely knackered me!

For the caravan I carry a small toolbox and two boxes of spares and bits & pieces which might be useful one day.

Caravanning for me means a quiet relaxing holiday. Sadly you name it, it breaks! In the middle of nowhere you will sll the basic tools mentioned will be used .
Various spares help. Even a toilet cassette blade😜 plus a multi meter and various sprays of stuff.

A couple of years ago, the Jockey Wheel clamp handle screw sheered just as we were setting up. Fortunately we weren't too far from Grantham Caravans where I was able to get a replacement, and a B&Q where I got some HSS drill bits and a stud extractor set to remove the half inch or so of screw which remained in the clamp. I now carry these, and a spare clamp handle in my tool box, just in case there isn't a caravan parts place within easy reach.

On our most recent trip, when we arrived at Hawes we found that the Motor Mover had failed (it was working earlier that day when we left Southport). I managed to reverse onto the pitch, the old fashioned way. A call to Truma diagnosed the issue as being the electronic control unit. I was able to order a new one and have it delivered to site next day (not cheap!). I have now found some places which will repair these electronic control units, and I'm seriously considering doing this, and carrying the repaired unit as a spare, in case a similar situation ever arises again. I suspect I'm being too cautious, but............
