Touring around Scotland - Advice & Recommendations

Hi there,

We are currently considering and looking at the possibility of touring Scotland, Starting with the Bunree CC site then onto Morvich at Shiel Bridge, we then intend to tour towards Ullapool and the north west before heading around the top for a few days at Dunnet Bay CC site, afterwards we'll make our way back down the eastern side of Scotland, towards Edinburgh.

I'm looking for advice of good sites on route other than the few i've mentioned, we are a member of both clubs.

Also what are the roads like in Scotland, mainly once you get further North around Ullapool up over, obviously whilst towing 22ft single axle caravan.

How long would you give yourself, we intend to stay at most main sites for 2 or 3 days with the possibility of overnighters enroute if required.

Another option should this prove to much to do in one go on a limited time factor we may go as far North as Inverness then come back down.

Any general advice will be much appreciated and if anyone has done this before i would love to hear your views and recommendations of where to go and stay etc.

Many Thanks

Andrew.

If you are coming back down the east side don't miss Aberdeenshire, mind you I would say that as I live there!

Consider Silverbank Caravan Club site at Banchory

Also Balbirnie Park Caravan Club site at Markinch in Fife.

As for you other plans can certainly recommend Bunree and Morvich, but don't try to do too much in one go as you will miss so much. Also consider the roads tend to be 'slower' so you can't cover so much ground, nor would you want to and miss the scenery.

Hi,

try Invernhavon near to Kingussie, it's just off the A9 and very spacious. It's a CC site managed under contract. Open to non-members. Well placed for touring Cairngorms and Mondailath Mts.

Cheers

Hi Andrew,

We live in Scotland and did a similar trip 2 years ago and needed 3 weeks to complete. From Morvich you can also stop at Kinlochewe and then on to Ullapool:-

1.Broomfield holiday park (www.broomfieldhp.com )

2.5 miles north of Ullapool is Ardmair Point caravan site. This one we have stopped on and had no complaints at all....beautiful outlook from the water front. (www.ardmair.com ) We were there in the off season & it was quiet but we did notice that the pitches were close together, but as there were few people there it wasn't a problem for us.

Durness.....Sango Sands is on the list for us this year as is Clachtoll campsite ( www.clachtollbeachcampsite.co.uk )

Grummore ( Altnaharra ) we stopped on for 2 nights and loved it so hope to include it this year ....no facilities.

Coming down the east coast Brora is a nice site within minutes walk of the beach and

Culloden /Inverness is a pleasant site.If you need to stock up there are 2 giant Tesco stores within easy

driving distance of the site.

Be aware that the MIDGE SEASON is from end of May until beginning of September. If you go during this time it is essential to have midge protection. They are prevalent on the West Coast but not so noticeable on the east side.

Don't try to do too much .....it is a vast area to cover......better to see a small piece and come back another time.

The roads up north ........there are a lot of single track roads and we would rather use them than the Devon lanes any time.Remember.....there is less traffic up there and there are plenty of passing places. All you need is common sense ,and courtesy.

Hope this helps you.Feel free to ask any questions.

Thanks for everyones comments so far! They are much appreciated.

I think we may break down this adventure into 2 or 3 different trips away, as generaly as i've spoken to people and comments on here seem to go with " do not do to much, take more time and appreciate the area's".

So its looking like this is what we'll do.

Probably still start with west eg: Bunree CC site and then to Morvich, but we may then head inland heading accrs to the east or there abouts and come back south. Leaving more northen parts for another trip away.

Thanks Again and if you have any further comments you'd like to add please feel free.

Andrew,

From Morvich......take a drive to Plockton. It's only a little village but very attractive.

You can also see Eilean Donan Castle which has a very imposing position at the side of the main road.(A87 )

A day trip to Skye also has to be on the cards and now you can cross the bridge toll free.

Another trip......if you stay at Kinlochewe is to drive along the A896 and visit Applecross.....going over the Pass of the Cattle ( solo of course ).To get in with a caravan one has to drive the coast road. The hotel there does very good food.

You can read up about these places on:-

Applecross and the Pass of the Cattle are fantastic, one of our favourite routes. Plockton is also lovely!
