Jimbob. Not sure I understand your question, but the ecotec diesel engine found in the likes of the GM range which includes Saab,goes back to 1996/7.They were used till around 2004/5,when they were replaced by the 1.9 joined venture Fiat/GM, although the engines was Fiats own anyway.
The larger v6 3.0l diesel found in a few GM and indeed Saabs, is still a GM motor,overseen by isuzu of Japan [another arm of GM]but finished off i.e. airflow and management systems by Saab,as that's where its main use would be,and is still used today.
Not bad engines,but somehow the 2.0 and the 2.2 lack the torque of its competitors by around 15/20%. would appear GM thought it cheaper/easier to dumb the 2.0/2.2 litre engines than struggle to find a way to meet the next generation of euro emission .
