could you please tell me why that there are never any towing reviews for saab cars as i my self hve been towing with saabs for at least the last three years first a 2001 saab 93 2.0t 150 bhp with avondale rialto 550/4 and now 2005 saab 95 2.2 TID towing a sprite quatro and still returning a very good 30 plus mpg

probably a combination of low numbers of people who actually use a SAAB for towing and the fact its heavily based on the Vectra.

Do like the 9-5 as a car. Any time I have to go to my office in Glasgow we usually get a hire car and its the 9-5 2.2 TDi Auto. Very smooth car I have to say.

One of my Heads Of Funtion swears by them , mainly because he buys them dirt cheap , them seem to loose money very quickly after new.

I don't have a Saab but my brother does. He's on his sixth or seventh I think and would not consider anything else now. They've all been second-hand but he says that sometimes it's been hard to find them as people tend to hang on to them.

Hi Graham,

We have been towing caravans now for 34yrs and I really don't recall seeing a SAAB towing a caravan.However as RogerP has mentioned a Vauxhall Vectra,we have the Vectra 2.2TdiSxri and this car has a Saab diesel engine in it with no cambelt as such as they have gone back to the chain driven cam.This is superb car tows like a dream,wouldn't swop it for any other car.So really engine wise I can see why to stay with SAAB's,Best Wishes .Jim

the 2.2 dti engine fitted to the older vauxhall vectra,s is not a saab engine,Its a larger type of the GM 2.0l dti engine from 1996 ish. being as GM own Saab they also fitted it to the Saabs.

Whilst it is true this 16valve motor did come with a camchain,the engine is no longer used.

Whilst the engine was direct injection, it was not common rail,so does not develop anywhere near the torque of more modern cars,ie common rail or VWs PD system.

Instead GM,which includes Saab, use the Fiat derived 1.9 engine in its place. this is belt driven.

I used to tow with a SAAB 9-5 aero, which was probably the best (and worst) car I have ever owned.

250 bhp, 250 ft lbs torque @ 1900 rpm, towed like a dream, but niggling reoccuring faults that the dealer couldn't fix drove me nuts. Along with the dealer costs, it had to go. Now have a new Santa fe, and whilst it doesn't have the get up and go of the SAAB, is a better tow car.

Jimbob. Not sure I understand your question, but the ecotec diesel engine found in the likes of the GM range which includes Saab,goes back to 1996/7.They were used till around 2004/5,when they were replaced by the 1.9 joined venture Fiat/GM, although the engines was Fiats own anyway.

The larger v6 3.0l diesel found in a few GM and indeed Saabs, is still a GM motor,overseen by isuzu of Japan [another arm of GM]but finished off i.e. airflow and management systems by Saab,as that's where its main use would be,and is still used today.

Not bad engines,but somehow the 2.0 and the 2.2 lack the torque of its competitors by around 15/20%. would appear GM thought it cheaper/easier to dumb the 2.0/2.2 litre engines than struggle to find a way to meet the next generation of euro emission .

You seem to quite knolegable about the various diesel engines fitted to Saab & GM vehicles.

I am interested to know the pedigree of my Y plate Saab 9-3 2.2Tid engine. I hears a rumour that it was derived from an Isuzu but others have said Fiat.

Your post of the 9th Nov seems to imply it is a variation of 2.0L GM engine,

Can you clarify please?

Its not a Fiat engine that's for sure, and isuzu is indeed part of the GENERAL MOTORS group. Good engines I had a vectra 2.0 tdi,and before that I had a cavalier 1.7td that was straight out of isuzu.

These day there are many shared engines,just look at the 2.0 tdci ford engine which is a peugeot,and is used by peugeot/Citroen, ford and its group ie Volvo ect ect.I believe the 1.6 diesel is the same too.also in the BMW mini i believe.

The 1.3 and 1.9 diesels in GM cars and Fiats are the same,indeed the 2.2 petrol engine from GM is found in Alfa Romeo.

Its all done to try to keep R&D costs down..
