Towcar for Sterckeman 390cp

I have a 2006 Sterckeman 390CP and have been towing with a Skoda Octavia 2 litre but need to change car quickly. I would like a smaller car and have looked at the Kia Rio - 1.5 CRDi Diesel but am very unsure of tow weights and the 75/85% rule? Help needed

According to my data, the MTPLM of a Sterckeman 390CP is 900kg, the kerbweight of the Kia Rio 1.5CRDi about 1150kg and its maximum permissible towload, 1100kg. Based on these figures, the weight ratio would be 78%, so you should be not only OK but also legal. Best to have them checked, though.

Thanks, all this MTPLM adn kerbweight ond permissable towload is double dutch to me. I had thought about a Skoda Roomster bu was told that it could not tow anything over 500

I don't know where whoever told you 500kg got their information from, but my data shows that even the smallest engined Roomster (the 1.2) can tow 700kg. This goes up to 1200kg for the 1.9TDI. It all depends what engine you were thinking about.

Kerbweight, and hence also the weight ratio, won't be an issue because all versions of the Roomster are heavier than the Kia Rio you are also looking at and that was OK.

Permissible towload is very important because this determines what you can legally tow. To tow a Sterckeman 390CP legally you would need at least a 1.4 litre Roomster.

Thanks. it was the Skoda dealer in Lincoln. I would like a smaller car - engine and size wise and they basically said the even the 1.9 Roomster woudl not tow and they would only recommend the Octavia. I have been happy with Skoda in the past but the Kia is certainly cheap and gets good write ups.
