Stephen, My suggestion would be a 6 cylinder Diesel like BMW 525/530d or a Merc E Class. I have a X plate 530d, weighs aprox 1760kg, gives about 35mpg in normal use (calculated - 40 on trip computer!!) and about 22-26 towing on the motorway depending on speed! (Caravan 1650 kg Max Loaded). Personally I wouldn't have anything else at present.

More torque than most if not all age comparable 4x4's, rear wheeel drive, incredibly refined - it won the best exec car for about 5years of its 7 year run and you can get a goodun now for

Car drivers don't park at the bottom of hills when they have a caravan, we leave that to the cowboys with 4x4s as they seem to enjoy ripping the turf up to show us all how their vehicle can tow anything anywhere.
You don't know what you're missing then!! Obviously you're not a proper caravanner!!

Sorry Lutz, it wasn't my intention to get you involved with this debate, I thought that it was at "rest" for a while. Please feel free to not answer.

It's OK, Lol, I can take it. The website that Stinky Pete is referring to as an example is hardly representative of public opinion in general. While there's no denying that one can find a minority that supports the sentiment expressed in that and similar articles, (why shouldn't there be people on the Continent that share Stinky Pete's views, too?) but you won't find any mention of the subject in any of the media that receive a wide audience. He has just taken something completely out of general context to be able to prove a point.

Well Lutz, I would like to be able to say it was similar over here, in fact the numbers representing both sides are probably similar. The big difference is the way people think, being in the majority seems to breed a comfort even apathy towards the decision making process. Where the minority are much more vocal, and although they are not representative of the masses, become able to dictate, that much easier.

Trouble is, you need to go a great distance to get a life, and for that you'll probably need a 4x4, see his dilemma?

Lol thats because if they have a cause they are passionate about it. The type of people they are though they will soon find a cause if they havent one at that moment. The majority just see them as a pain in the a**e and hope they will burn themselves out but they dont. To put it in a nutshell if life was all rosey and they had nothing to protest about they would protest about protesters.

I bet Stinky drives around in a 2CV and wears an anorak and bobblehat. A few dozen 2"x2"x3' pieces of wood in the back and a few dozen blank placards so that he can write out his "protest of the moment".

That must be his second car then my Lord, Stinky's first car is a gas guzzling people carrier, which I'm led to believe prowls the back streets at night picking up unwilling strangers to use as passengers in order to validate having such a vehicle. Indeed he probably tows the CV around with him to highlight his green credentials (for which you can now get a tablet from your doctor).

Hey Lord B - the Citroen 2Cv is a damn fine classic car and should not be ridiculed in such a manner (even though it is foreign made). If you are not careful you will upset the classic car fraternity and the Citroen 2CV Owners Club. You should realise on this forum you cannot go knocking things willy nilly just because you don't like them. You will have anothe section of society after your guts. Behave yourself as being a Lord you are supposed to be one of the pillars of society.

Wow, that's a bit of an outburst! I mearly pointed out that in every country where 4x4's are used needlesly, there are people with the guts to complain about them. I also backed this up with proof that anyone can easily verify.

I also pointed out the the "privileged" do not drive these things. If peole start thinking that a 4x4 will make you appear privileged, those that are thinking about buying one may be tipped in the wrong direction and those that already have one will feel they have the right to even more of the road.

methinks you to protest to much....

While your around Stinky, tell us, what happened to the old Stinky? The one that would share a joke and a laugh, not the troubled Stinky we see today. Something happen to colour your outlook on life?

Whooooaaaa!! Calm down folks, I wasn't having a pop at 4x4 drivers Wendy and co! Just stating that my car has more torque than other big 6 cylinder engined cars/4x4s and that with its kerbweight it can pull the biggest of vans, just like a 4x4 but probably eassier in performance terms and better in economy terms! Facts!

For the record I don't often tow across fields and on the 1 occasion when I got stuck on a slippery field with wheelspin, a Trooper towed me off and jolly grateful I was too!

Finally as I only tow for about 15% of my annual milage, and 99.9% of that towing milage is on tarmac, well I just can't see the need for a 4x4! My choice, you are entitled to yours and good luck to you!

Jesus! Touchy bu***rs aren't they these 4x4ers!

Now, you see Andy, some of us 4x4 owners are a little touchy. If you have read what's been going on for a long time, with 4x4s you should understand why. We do feel defensive, due to the fact that we have had to defend our use of said cars when really, no one should have to. Seems we have been singled out for some reason, so sorry for being a little curt. You state that you don't need or want a 4x4, and that's fine, really, I could if I wanted to state where you are failing, but I won't because you have every right to choose the car you want. That's the attitude we want too, it really is the time to stop this, and at least it's confined to the Tow car section (if that's some sort of achievement), so lets hope it dies down soon, eh!

I was the OP for this thread. All I was trying to do (other than start an argument of course, he he) was to maybe point out that some people with 4x4's (if you can an x-trial a 4x4) do have a genuine reason for having them. Also wanted to point out (to those that just jump on the bandwagon) that not all SUV's are bigger, wider, more poluting etc than saloon cars.

NCAP ratings for smaller SUV's are also comparable or better than normal saloons, so ANY argument against I cant see as been a valid one.

If the anti 4x4's people want to get more backing, they need to state exactly what makes and models of 4x4 they have a problem with and the exact reason why. Until this happens they havnt really got a valid point as saying "all 4x4's are bad" is just about the same as saying "all XXXXX are suicide bombers". Not every 4x4 is the same, in the same way that not every XXXX is a suicide bomber.

surely the arguement should be

anyone that has a totally unsuitable vehicle for the job they want it to do should be advised to change

if you tow large objects in terrain that is slippery you need 4x4

if all you do is pop to the shops or take the kids to school you need a vehicle that carrys the required number of passengers at town type speeds.

I once witnessed the anti 4x4 brigade verbally attack a woman (farmers wife) for taking her kid to school in an old landrover. She was infact taking a break from checking the perimeter fence and sheep which really does need a 4x4 and the school was 4 miles from the farm which is a bit far for a 5 year old to walk. They ignored the woman who lived opossite me taking her child to school in a 2.5 litre ford mondeo, a journey of a full 750 yards. I nearly started a riot when I told them they should be attacking the mondeo driver not the 4x4 driver, they just kept on about how environmentally unfriendly the 4x4 was.

please remember its horses for courses
