Thinking of changing towcar. Does anyone out there tow with Citroen C5. If so what model and engine and what weight of van towed. Any views as to suitability as a towcar?

Thanks

I have a 2.0 HDi VTR hatch which seems to do a fantastic job although our van is quite light (1100Kg) so doesn't really push it to the limit. We did spend a month in France this wet summer travelling in excess of 2,500 miles without problems. For some reason you very rarely see them featured in tow car comparison, or tow car of the year but when you get on sites esp. in France you see an awful lot of them, many pulling vans around 1400, 1500 kg! The self levelling suspension is excellent for hitching up on uneven pitches and on bumpy tracks.

John Griff. Thanks, very useful. I wondered if self levelling would be of help. Like you cannot understand why we do not see many tests in the mags. I currently tow with a Picasso and would like to upgrade in weight of towcar to change caravan. I am a Citroen enthusiast so would like to stay with Citroen if I could. Any other Citroen C5 tows out there.

I had a 2002 2.2 diesel Exclusive estate in which I did 80,000 miles. It towed 1,400 Kgs really well and proved to be a very stable and safe tow car.

I was disappointed with the fuel comsumption, about 35 mpg solo, and the need to replace tyres regularly. Although Citroen have changed it now the emissions are controlled by a filter which is a

My 2.0 is the updated model so it does a lot better on fuel, approx 42 mpg solo but that did drop to 31 mpg during the French trip. We had a very heavily laden car though throughout with dog food, 40 litres of wine, beer, etc. I guess the C5 is just one of those unsexy cars that will never bring a rush of blood to the motor journalist of this world BUT they are quiet, smooth, stable and extremely good value. Ignore all the rubbish about depreciation as well, claims are usually based on list price and you won't pay anything like that if you buy new.

I must check out Bill's comments about the filter. The service intervals are 20000 miles and the filter wasn't done as far as I'm aware last time (bill was approx

hello cleg, dont own one but have towed our van with my dads c5 2.2 hdi.van weighs 1250kg, no probs what so ever.an absolute brillant engine, which i suppose is normal for the french.the 138bhp doesnt really sound all that special now, although not to be sniffed at.but the torque is amazing, something like 250lbs ft,right from bearly above tickover.ive towed with citreon diesels for years,i dont think there,s ever been a bad one.
