Hi, I am thinking of getting a volvo v70 2.0 diesel, but am confused by the brochure - the max towing weight braked is down as 1500kg, but on checking a v5 for the same car the v5 has 1600kg, our van is plated at 1600, so would this be legal. Is the quoted weight a guide or law, ie insurance implications?.

the 2 ltr would be legal provided your 'van was never loaded to more than 1500kgs. in all likelyhood it would be at some point and you'd be breaking the law, not to mention the damage your vehicle may suffer in the long term.

my opinion is that the 5 cylinder diesel is much better in every respect, particularly for towing a decent sized 'van.

incidentally, the 2ltr diesel fitted to the volvo, is the same unit fitted to the s type jaguar. it's actually a ford transit engine.

Not quite. If the maximum towing weight braked is 1500kg, then the maximum weight of caravan that one may tow legally is 1500 plus noseweight which, in the case of the Volvo V70, is 75kg, i.e. 1575kg in total.

Hi,thanks for you replies. The volo dealer assures use as do Volvo customers services that the max towed braked weight will be 1600 as the v5 states and thats the legal weight not the brochure one so we will be fine, our van's miro is 1310 but has a huge payload, we only use it as a two berth and have never yet filled all the lockers as we travel light so I think we will be fine at 89% match if fully loaded.
