Can anyone help, we have been told our car is suitable to tow a Bailey Pagent Magenta (unladed weight 1200). Now having doubts, has anyone towed a caravan with a Golf 1.6?

Based on the information you have given in your posting, as far as I can see all 1.6L Golfs have had a 1200Kg max tow load capacity. If as you state the Bailey has a 1200Kg UNLADEN weight, then you could tow the caravan but it must be totally empty, no battery, gas, clothes or food, so I am sorry but this not a practical proposition.
Just a note though, On this occasion I believe the above advice is correct, but for many models of car, the allowed towed mass can change with the different years of production, and with body style. Similarly caravan manufacturers also keep a particular model name but change various aspects of with updates etc. So it is important to give the full model year and body style and engine variation when seeking this type of towing information.
