Towing with a 607 2.2 HDI Auto

Hi All,

can anyone let me know if you can or cannot tow with a 2.2 HDI 607 with an automatic gearbox (has the fancy porsche style tiptronic semi auto version too)? When we bought ours, the garage told us "no problem". Since reading the manual it says "do not tow under any circumstances".

We have a Swift Assura (around 1.1 tonnes).

Anyone have any knowledge of towing with an auto? I dont really want to try and destroy the gearbox.

TIA

Gordie

HI Gordie,

I'm sorry but its bad news.

If the relevant manufacturers manual for your car states 'Do not tow' then there is no way round it.

If you do tow with it, then you will be breaking a number of laws, Firstly you will not have an approved towbar, because no tow bar is approved for the car.

You will not have a road legal outfit, as the authorities will take the manufactures specification, which states no towing.

I do not know what mechanical damage may ensue, but none of it would be covered by warranty if it had been used for towing.

I think Seth is correct (but check first with a dealer). Many automatic cars cannot be towed in the event of a breakdown, and must be completely lifted onto a recovery vehicle to prevent damage to the gearbox.

Manual cars do not have this problem and can be towed.

I would be surprised if any modern car could not be used for actually towing a trailer within the appropriate limits for the car.

My database tells me that the 607 2.2HDI has a maximum permissible towload of 1850kg (manual) and 1800kg (automatic), but the owner's manual should have details to confrim.

No problem to tow with your 607. We have a club member has towed for years with his 2.2 diesel auto. The "do not tow" instruction refers to towing the car itself in the event of a breakdown. This applies to all automatic vehicles.

Stop worrying, just go and enjoy a superb car.(for a front wheel drive salloon!!!)

Hello Geordie,

I think I need to clarify my earlier reply.

Your first line "can anyone let me know if you can or cannot tow with a 2.2 HDI 607 with an automatic"

This reads as though you were asking about towing a trailer with your car. My reply was based on that pre condition and your later statement stating do not tow.

If I have misunderstood your question, and it seems possible, then I agree with the other posters.
