hello, just bought this new car but need have a tow bar fitted before we can tow with it. Does anyone tow with this car? We have swift challenger 530 08 model. Looked on What Tow Car and it is compatable with the S-Max. Any tips etc. would be very welcome.

hi erica.

I contemplated buying a Ford S max and having read the towing reviews on them, they do sound like a good towcar.

The only thing that put me off is having the towbar fitted.

I cant quite remember now what the problem is(im sure someone else here will put me right)but it was something to do with programming the electrics to the cars "brain".

Forgive me if im slightly wrong but as i say, there should be more advice forthcoming here.

Hi erica.

I have an S-Max 2.0TDCi. It tows like a dream and I can't praise it enough for comfort and performance. I have the factory fitted removable towbar but any reputable towbar fitter should be able to fit one. Just make sure they use the correct wiring loom and that any work they carry out won't invalidate the Ford warranty.

Hi Erica, I have a Ford SMAX and can honestly say its the best car I've owned, so much so, we've just sold our 2008 model for the updated 2010 model.

After much research, I had my towbar fitted at my local (very reputable) independant fitter. When I spoke to my local Ford dealer and the supplying dealer, they told me that they would have got the same people in themselves to fit the towbar anyway!

The car itself is so versatile, the 6th and 7th seats are only used occasionally, but are perfect for kids and short trips for adults. It tows like a dream (our 'van is 1500kg), holds at 60 in 6th on the motorway.

All in all, probably the perfect family car - well it is for us!

Thanks to everyone for your replies. Our S-Max is also the new 2010 model, dFord said we could go to any towbar fitter so we are going with one that was recommended to us . Ford said they would only get someone in to fit the towbar themselves so cant see there being a problem. We,ve only had the car a week and its a dream to drive or so my hubby says, (I dont drive). We are hoping to have a towbar fitted nearer the end of august. We have our caravan on a seasonal pitch this year, but in october are hoping to visit Ebury Hill camping and caravan club site at Shrewsbury.
