Hi Ian
We travelled to near Rome in 2007. We travelled by, toll free, autoroutes, from Dunkerque via, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and France to near Nancy before turning east on the N66. We then went through Switzerland, had to buy Swiss toll vignettes for car and caravan, and then through St Gotthard Tunnel and on to Italy. This was the second time we had done this route as we had travelled to near Venice in 2006.
For Rome stayed at Camping Roma Sporting Flash at Bracciano which is to the North of the city and handy for rail links to the centre. You can see my review here:

On the way home we visited Lake Iseo and stayed at a beautful site overlooking the Lake - Campeggio Riva San Pietro in Marone. My review is here:

As a car breakdown meant that Caravan Club's Red Pennant insurance had supplied us with a less powerful tow car than our own we travelled home via the Brenner Pass Motorway into Austria and then on, toll free, through Germany and France back to Dunkerque. The Austrian tolls are cheaper as a 10 day ticket can be bought and is only required for the car, not caravan.
