We're off to portugal for the first time, going via the ferry to santander then cutting across spain spending a night at salamanca then into portugal and then down to the algarve. I'm not a lover of mountain roads to say the least so can anyone let me know what the roads are like so I'm prepared before I go.

Done that route a few times, Diane. Can't remember anything horrendous about it at all.

You're probably aware that Hotel Regio on the outskirts of Salamanca is as 24/7 campsite.

Hi Diane

The the motorways and the non-motorway trunk roads are good and the trafic is light compared to the UK. If you are crossing the border at Guarda the motorway heading South West from there is good and free of tolls. The South Coast A22 likewise. The North / South Motorway, Porto / Lisbon / Algarve is very good, but also very expensive in tolls (they double the toll if you are towing a caravan). Minor roads, other than major trunk routes are very risky, ie. can be narrow, bumpy and even cobbled - best to avoid these.

Another good way to reach the Algarve is to follow the new (free) motorway South from Salamanca towards Seville, but pick up the Madrid to Lisbon motorway half way down and cross the border on this. It has a toll in Portugal but you can turn off at Evora (good campsite) and take the non motorway route South.

Hope this helps

Keith

Thanks both I've not joined a forum before and its a bit of a novel experience but I feel the weight being lifted from my shoulders already. Not aware of hotel Regio but we have booked camping Ruta de la Plata at Salamanca for an overnight stop on the way down.I think we are crossing the border at Guarda so i look forward to a good run down thanks for the advice
