Hi All

Sitting here on this cold and dark winter's evening my thoughts are turning to next summer's hols. We are thinking about caravanning in Slovenia and Croatia for the first time.

As we are both teachers we would be going for about 5 weeks from late July to late August. We would be grateful for any advice/recommendations for routes and sites, including some night halts enroute.

When travelling we prefer main roads to toll autoroutes. We like quiter sites with lake/sea/ mountain views and, if possible somewhere we can use our 3 metre Zodiac inflatable boat (outboard motor).

Thanks in anticipation.

The best route is through Germany and Austria. I cannot comment too much on Slovenia, but do check any local requirements as they are not in the EU. However Croatia is a very popular holiday destination and has some lovely areas. However as a consequence it can be very busy in the popular parts, especially on the coast at weekends, and July/August is peak season. If you can go outside the high season then it will be much better, or you may also find an awful lot of Germans everywhere, as many of them moved on to Croatia from Lake Balaton once prices in Hungary rose.

The Camping Cheque guide lists a goood number of sites for a start, or try the Croatian tourist pages.

Slovenia is most certainly in the EU, Scotchlad, it also trades in the Euro as its currency. The site on Lake Bled is supposed to be very good. We have not stopped there but have visited it and looks nice. The CC recommend it.

Slovenia is a very pretty country and the people very friendly and speak a good deal of English. Road Vingette is quite pricey. 15 euros for 7 days and 30 euros for 1 month.

The tolls for Europe are all listed on www.tollticket.com

There are a few sites mentioned in the ACSI Camping Card Book.

Camp Danica, Bohinj 3 star, at Bohinjska Bistrica, being one which is in a pretty spot.

Have you tried Southern Austria it is lovely down there and borders Slovenia and you can visit for the day. Tolls much Cheaper in Austria.

We always travel thro Germany and Austria.

Hi Tim

Agree with Dianne,

We made the decision to give Slovenia a try and we were not disappointed. Obviously an area like this would not be everyones "cup of tea" but if hobbies include walking, cycling, sightseeing and basically just chilling out, this is the place. We stayed at Camping Bled for 13 nights (not too far over the Austria Border (800 miles from Zeebrugge)excellent weather, stunning scenery and very friendly people (English appears to be the 2nd language)

The pitches on site were acceptable, bit short of grass in places, but the shower / toilet facilities were excellent and very well maintained. The site is readilly accessible to the Lake.

We used the autobahns through Germany (no tolls) with 2 x two night stops in Germany, Camping Rudesheim am Rhein and Donau-Lech Camping. Both good sites and easily accessible from the autobahns. The route through Austria into Slovenia was also on autobahn but vignette's had to be paid. Looking at the map I could not see any suitable alternative route to avoid the autobahns in Austria and Slovenia.

All in all a thoroughly enjoyable trip
