Hi folk

New to caravaning and have a compass rallye gte with a tomato s 3002 gas fire with trumavent ten blown air unit.

The gas fire won't start and the air only heats to being "not cold" instead of 30' as listed on thermostat.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Hi sprocket and thanx for quick reply

When we got the van we followed the instructions in the manuals etc and even changed battery for the igniter but nothing happened.

As far as I'm aware I believe the gas is going to the fire as I can't see any other valves etc which might lock it off.

It's such a let down as everything else is working except heating

Thanx again

Hello Rob,
Welcome to the forum.

The "Trumavent" is the fan system on the rear of the heater, and only distributes the air from the heater. The heater is a Truma S3002.

Obviously you need to make sure the gas is turned on to the heater. Caravans have isolating valves which 'isolate' appliances from the gas supply. They are usually a bank of 3 or 4 red topped twist valves. Gas is on when the top of the valve lines up with the spur it feeds. It depends on the caravan manufacturer, but some place them in the wardrobe, or under the oven, some inside bedding lockers. Idally they should be marked to show which appliance they relate to.

Because you have changed the batteries in the ignitor please double check their polarity.

Lets just check your lighting procedure. To light the heater you should turn the gas control to the ignition position. You should hear and see lamp on the automatic ignitor sparking about 2 to 3 times a second. Press the gas control down and hold it down for several seconds. This is to prime the thermocouple flame failure device and allow gas through to the burner

When the flame ignites, the ignitor should stop firing automatically. Keep the gas control held down for about 7 seconds this is to allow the thermocouple to warm up enough to generate the necessary current to hold the flame failure device open, When you let it go the flame should stay alight. You can then adjust the control valve to your desired setting.

If you are lighting the heater for the first time after a long storage period or after changing gas bottles, you may need to keep the gas valve pressed down for up to a minute before the gas comes through the pipe work.

Because this is a gas appliance its important that only competent gasfitters undertake any work on the heater or its flue systems. However there are a limited number of thing you can do provided you feel confident enough.

If the ignitor did not spark when you turned the gas valve, then there are a few things you can try.
Remove the heaters front cover to expose the finned heat exchanger. Using an insulated screw driver or pair of long nosed pliers, short out the two thin wires that make contact with the end of the ignitor block. THis should cause the ignitor to start firing. If it does, then it points to a faulty microswitch in the head of the gas valve. Get the heater serviced.

If the above does not cause the ignitor to spark, then remove the battery carrier (to prevent being shocked) and unplug the single wire that goes to the back of the ignitor. Replace the batteries, and try turning the gas valve. If the ignitor fires, then it suggests the high tension electrode is faulty. Turn the gas valve off. Get the heater serviced.

If neither of the above cause the ignitor to spark then the ignitor is faulty and needs to be replaced This is a DIY job, as no gas parts need to be dismantled.

Just a note, You may notice that one of the two wires that go between the gas valve and the ignitor is 'trapped' under a clamping plate. This is normal and must be left trapped, as it provides part of the ignitors flame detection system.

Thanks Profjohn

As far as I know the gas is on.. But have been unable to get under van to check all pipelines etc

Hopefully away this weekend in it and will get a chance to trace the lines and make sure. Otherwise will complete the checks as you described

Thanks again

Rob
