This wheel had a Tyron band fitted. Towing a Lunar Clubman with a Freelander, which was a very stable secure combination, with the 'tug' well in charge of the outfit. (Van 2 years old) Set off on holiday about 20 miles from home car felt as thought it had lost power, no alarms up, van looked ok in mirrors, engine revved freely with clutch in. Single carriageway clearway road (A15) approaching Lincoln, so stopping was not easy, however found a wide gate entrance pulled in and then walked round the outfit to see if I/we could find anything untoward. The pictured tyre was then spotted, we couldn't believe it! We had felt nothing, wife however did mention hearing a 'muffled bang' - 1/2 a mile back. Must have been that tyre. Changed wheel, not prepared to continue on holidy without spare wheel, went across Lincoln to the van supplying dealer who fixed us up with a spare so holiday back on. (After 'Gaffa taping a wrecked wheel arch up!) So I suspect that the Tyron band had done it's job. Kept us towing in a stable straight line in traffic, perhaps too good a job as we were totally unaware we had lost a tyre. Had punctures before on van but had always known when it happened..
Ps dont use Tyron bands now.

The inference that the band manufacture puts forward is that a deflated tyre will remain on the rim and not shred!

Before every trip I do a tyre check on the caravan checking all round the tyres for any visible signs of damage and then at five years old they come off, most important piece of equipment on the caravan,

Tyron is a patented lightweight well-filler band that converts a standard steel or alloy wheel into a safety wheel. When fitted, it will significantly improve the performance and safety of any wheel or tyre in the event of deflation. At speed it assists the driver in maintaining steering, cornering ,braking and traction control. It provides a short run-flat capability so you can choose a safe place to stop and change the wheel.

This is from the Tyron web page, as I have had two vans fitted with them i will keep them.
The "Humps" in a wheel rim is to assist in seating and sealing, not to keep a tyre on the rim in the case of deflation, thats why certain tyres are "Runflat".

Having recently purchased a tow car with TPMS already fitted, I thought it might be a good idea to fit a similar system to our caravan. Hopefully, it would give a warning that something was wrong prior to a tyre shredding itself, and at the very least damaging the caravan. After much research I settled for the TYREPAL system @ £135.00. I found a lot of other cheaper versions, but the reviews were excellent for the TYREPAL system. Has anybody else got a TPMS fitted?. On the face of it, they seem a "must have" item!.

I have it, well I did have it!!!!!!!!!!!!
Purchased mine 11 months ago and the monitor is currently back with Tyrepal..........Yep it packed up.
The last few times I used it it packed up after about 20 mins and the last time it wouldn't come on at all, so happy I was able to send back with it just in warranty.
Having said that I would not be happy driving/towing without ti now, when it works it is great.
Will keep you posted.

Had an email from TyrePal today stating the monitor was faulty, they are sending a replacement :)
[Good timing as the warranty runs out on 24th of July]

My neighbour had his TPMS sensors taken out from his 54 Reg Peugeot and no MoT has spotted it yet..

His car is OK. The tester wouldn't be interested. It's only on cars registered after November 2012 that need working sensors

Phoenix which system have you gone for as the price you are paying seems very reasonable to say the least.

Just looked it up are you just monitoring the van with the two sensor system?

After much research on other forums and facebook groups, I went for the TyrePal system.
I could have got similar (read cheeper), via e.bay etc, but this is a UK based product, which should have good after sales if it all goes pete tong!.

Hello Hutch

If seating and sealing is not part and parcel of a process of locating and retaining the bead, then why do the rims have them?

The problem with the advertisers blurb on the manufacturer's web site is it doesn't stand up to scientific analysis. It's not telling lies but its not telling the whole truth. They make claims for their product, but do not show any comparative evidence that proves their system does make a difference.

The methodology of some of their examples does not correlate to real life blow out processes. Yes the product may work against sniper fire, but how many caravanners drive through shooting galleries? Explosive charges do not replicate the mechanism that lead to blowouts, and the damage to tyre and its wall structures is very different.

If bands were so successful and provided any realistic safety benefit, two things wold have happened, Firstly there would a lot of pressure for car manufacturers to fit them as standard, and probably more telling is the poor market penetration and the lack of similar products world wide.

Until there is some real positive proof of the benefits of using bands on car or caravans I cannot recommend them.
I anyone wan'ts to spend their money thats ok, but I can think of useful things to do with the cash.

Edit PS I don't think the patent Tyron may have would protect them form similar retention products.

SWMBO car has an OEM TPMS. It works brilliantly. Only a few weeks ago it told it a tyre was below pressure on start up. Inspection revealed a flat. New tyre needed.
Our good friend Sproket recommended a UK made TPMS a few years ago . A retrofit for both car and caravan including TAs. A must have imo.
As for Tyron Bands you spend your money how you wish. I can think of much better caravan accessories I'd prefer.
That said it's only a few years ago that shock absorbers / dampers were fitted as standard to caravans B)

I read on another forum that Photobucket was going to stop allowing images to be displayed on forums without a fee being paid first. But I've found no change what-so-ever. Still as slow and clunky as ever..

Yep, for some reason they (Photobucket) want me to pay a yearly subscription to use their site. Every picture I've ever published on PC via Photobucket has disappeared. - So cheerio Photobucket. (PS only place I use it for is PC forum!)

Extract from ' -buckets help page:-

Update on installation.
Fitted the system today prior to a trip out this weekend.
The manual is ok, but I found it a bit confusing.
Watched the on line videos which explained it much better.
I could not get any of the wheel sensors to register, despite following the manual instructions several times.
In the end, dismantled sensors, carefully bent (to increase pressure) battery securing tabs....and amazing...both sensors now registered.
So far so good, parameters set etc.
Just got to try it in anger now.

Not brilliant quality then if you have to dismantle the sensors and bend contact tabs. Something like that at the sort of price paid should be expected to work out of the box.

Agreed.
All the components look / feel good quality, but let down by the final prep.
It might have been better if they left the batteries out altogether, and the user fitted them.
At least its working and I did not have to resort to the dreaded customer service call.
Web site is good, with lots of help.

After a trip away this weekend the Tyrepal system has worked faultlessly.
Maintained a regular read out of pressures and temperatures throughout.
Massive peace of mind, and knowing that all was well with the caravan.
I realize that not everybody can afford the system, and that caravans have been towed around for years without them, but what a fantastic bit of kit, which IMHO should now be a standard fit to all new vans. Great!.
