Tyre Pressure when Towing

Just read my Toyota book, it says tyre pressure is the same no matter what the load is in the vehicle, anyone care to contradict this ??. I mean that in the nicest possible way, I value technical advice on this forum.

Hi Frank, Obviously my LC4 has the same instructions, as did my Colorado before it. I tow a large twin axle about 7,000 miles a year and can confirm that I have had no problems towing following Toyotas advice. In previous Toyota cars the advise is to increase pressures.

Enjoy your towing, it is a great vehicle, especially the auto with cruise control.

If that's what the handbook states, then take that as gospel.

Conventional cars are usually recommended by their manufacturer to have tyre pressures at the load setting when towing but large SUVs are often best at standard pressure.
 
Thanks for the replies, I have been following the Toyota handbook, it was just that I had seen somewere you should increase the pressure when towing !!! I thought maybe I was missing something. (Before anyone answers that) A little piece of my brain is missing, due to gamma knife surgery )

I find this a little confusing but have seen this written and been advised the following several times over the years.

.....Increased loading does not increase the tyre pressure - it deforms the tyre but the pressure remains constant.....

The reason I struggle a little with this is, let's say you hit a pothole resulting in the tyre bursting.

Did the tyre burst because the sidewall deformed too much or because of a rapid increase in pressure?

Why does the tyre wall deform if it is not subject to extra pressure?

If there is not an increase in pressure when the tyre is loaded what is actually supporting the extra weight?
