Has anyone got any ideas or opinions about how mover may affect the tyres, when you consider the force and size of the roller pressing on the tread casing in a relatively small area.

The pressure from the motor mover rollers is really not that high. Potholes and hitting kerbs is certainly a lot worse.

I confirm Lutz's view, but if you are concerned then only engage the rollers when you need them.

By comparison to the edge of pothole, the continuous round shape of the roller has to be kinder, and the tyre is continually conforming, where as a pot hole is a sudden impact with at least half the momentum of the caravan behind it.

Tony,

The link is really usefull, thanks. I have just had my caravan serviced and been told that both tyres have a manufacture date of 1989, despite the caravan being a year 2000 model. I had only bought the van in late 2006 from a 'reputable' dealer. I must admit the tyres do not look 20 years old, the sidewall is just starting to deteriorate, so I'm going to get them changed before the next outing. Does anyone have any preferred tyre manufacturer? I currently have Hancook tyres.

Thanks,

Steve

The impact created by the tyre itself coming into contact with even a smooth road at speed, is far in excess of what the roller exerts on the tyre.

When considering replacement tyres, be careful to avoid "rotation sensitive" tyres. If you have them fitted it will mean you cannot swop wheels side for side long term, and there is a 50/50 chance your spare will be wrong rotation.

Advice is that fitting a "wrong rotation" tyre is an emergency only - say 150 miles - idea. There seems to be no good reason for such tyres to be fitted to caravans in the first place, but some are viz. my MY 2005 MY Burstner S500TS.

If you are a CC member, go on their website and download the technical leaflet - very helpful.
