Vauxhall Cavalier

I have reluctantly bought myself a 1993 Vauxhall Cavalier 1.8 petrol, as a temporary tow car while my Mondeo is repaired. I have read the thread on the Mondeo but was wondering if anyone has towed with a Cavalier. It has been recently used as such by the current owner so I know the electrics work and he seems satisfied with the performance. It is just a stop gap but would be interested to hear your comments.

Does anyone know if these are particularily heavy cars? I noted a plate on the engine said GVW, which I assume to be Gross Vehicle Weight, as 1630 KG. Wondering if this will be under powered.

For several years I towed a 1300kg caravan with a 1.8 petrol. You can move with the traffic if you make liberal use of the gears and you shouldn't be afraid of letting the engine rev a lot. When towing, you can forget 5th gear. But otherwise, it got me everywhere we wanted to go, even right up to the Arctic Circle in Norway.

I used to tow with one of these years ago when they were new, it was quite adequate for the van I had then, mind you that was a Perle Orion with a max weight of just 1000 kg. Fifth gear could only really be used once up to about 55 and on the flat but apart from that it was a very good towcar in its day.

Didnt the Cavalier win some award in its time for being towcar of the year, mind you that may have been a 2/2.5 litre version.
