vauxhall omega

I ran a 2.6 auto Omega, towing a Swift Challenger 530.

Towed no problem at all, but boy did it drink petrol whilst towing. I now tow with a Sorento auto, better mpg when towing but uses more when solo. All in all fuel wise over the year it probably works out even.

I towed with a 1994 Omega 2.5 petrol a few years ago. My van was about 1200kg fully laden and the car towed it with no problems. Took it to France a couple of times and tnere were no problems with overheating, so I would say an oil cooler is not necessary

I used to tow with an Omega 2.5 auto, but sold it because I only managed around 18 mpg. that was mainly due to the autobox changing down when it saw an incline. If I could have held a gear it may have been better.

As regards the oil cooler, never needed one, and a Vauxhall mechanic told me if I had fitted one during the warranty period, it would have invalidated the warranty.

Hi Robert,

You don't say how old the Omega will be but watch out for overheating if it's more than 5 years old. Nothing to do with the autobox but plenty to do with modern aluminium radiators clogging up. They are ussually fine for normal driving but strap on a van and just watch the temp guage climb when you meet a hill!

From recent experience I have seen clogged rads on an X reg Omega and Shogun and heard from the trade that the radiator has almost become a service item on Jags over 5 years old.

Even with the correct attention to antifreeze quality it seems that radiators do bung up on certain models after time, which is not good for us tuggers.
