Hi, I'm thinking of buying a 2008 Vauxhall Zafira diesel 1.9 CDTi 150 bhp to tow by Lunar Quasar 525. This meets the 85% loaded caravan/kerbweight recommendation, but I was wondering what anyone thinks about the suitability? Thanks, Dai

The MTPLM of the Quasar (2010 Model Year) is 1395kg.

The maximum permissible towload of a Zafira 1.9 CDTi 150 bhp is 1500kg, so that gives you quite a safe margin.

If the car has a 4.19 axle ratio (which I suppose it does) it will have a maximum permissible towload of 1500kg.

According to my database, the MTPLM of an Abbey Aventura 316 is 1408kg.

In your last post you mention an 01 model. That would be the generation before the 07 model that you referred to before. However, I can find no model with a 1350 towload limit, regardless of whether it's a 01 or a 07. The details on your V5c should be correct, though.

If the MTPLM of an 01 model Aventura 316 is 1350kg compared to 1408kg of the current one, then you've got a bigger margin to the towload limit of 1500kg of the Vectra.

lutz, cheers buddy.

you have given me the advice i thought was about right, others have posted to my earlier posts when i first joined but most of the answers were quite technical. i have towed with this a couple of times now, and even being a newbie at the game i found it pretty easy to handle, apart from dropping down the gears on inclines. might be going for the diesel 1.9 model now.

cheers :)

For several years during the early and mid-90's I towed a 1300kg caravan with a 1.8 litre 90hp Vectra. It sometimes required dropping down to 2nd gear at 50mph on some hills in order to keep up with the traffic, but the car never grumbled.

lutz, ye have made me think of what an old seasoned caravanner up here in my neck of the woods told me about the the recommended weight margins for towing. he says that the recommendations came about years ago to give the 85% match in relation to the cars of the day. however, he says that modern cars are way above the capabilities of those from days and the power and torque they provide is more than plenty to accomodate the extra load. i think thats a good point, especially if the recommendations havent been updated.

i can vouch for how much bikes have progressed in the short time of one decade, i have always had one of the latest pocket rockets, the litre class sports bikes. each one i had seemed to take biking into another dimension, and ultimately i have one which pushes out 172 bhp at the back wheel, phenomanal progress, and cars are the same.

would be good idea if the issue was revisited and new benchmarks given in relation to the modern machinery.

we tow with an 08 model towing a sterling 460 at 1300kg mptl

it will pull 6 th gear easily on flat from 55 mph plus

returning mid twenties mpg

with two bikes on roof it goes up to 30mpg must disturb airflow like an aerofoil ive checked it several times and it is consistant

good luck graham

graham, i take it your car is the diesel model as you mention sixth gear ?. i did say mine was the petrol version. good advice if i was going to change to the diesel and thanks for that, but last weekend we went and traded in for a hyundai tucson, still the petrol model but a much higher towing capability. get it tomorrow and planning on being away for long weekend ( if the predicted heavy snow disny come )

should have a good comparision by then :)
