Vauxhall Zafira v Vectra Estate

We are thinking of changing our 1996 Vauxhall Omega 2.5 tdi estate for either a 1-2 year old 1.9CDTI 150bhp Vectra Estate or Zafira (same engine) & wondered if anyone could give us advice on either car,for or against. We tow an Avondale Rialto with gross weight of 1300 kgs.

Many thanks-Carol

Zafira maximum braked trailer weight: 1100kg

Vectra estate maximum braked trailer weight: 1600kg

decision made I would say. The zafira is not really up to towing your van. Hope this helps.

Ben's reply is misleading. If you want a car with the 1.9CDTI 150 hp engine, the maximum permissible towload is 1500kg for both the Zafira and the Vectra Estate. The only snag is that this engine is only available in the new Zafira. That would mean having to buy a new car, not a 1-2 year old. However, the same engine was available earlier in the Vectra, so you should be able to find an appropriate used one.

Carol,

Personnaly I would update the Omega - they are cheap as chips and with rear wheel drive will tow the pants off a Zafira or Vectra. Try and find a factory 2.2 LPG car or stick with the 2.5 DTI, it's a BMW engine and should outlast the rest of the car if it's regularly serviced. The trade apparently does not like the 2.5 V6 though and I would steer clear.

I don't know why you should think that performancewise the 2.2 petrol or 2.5DTI Omega should be superior to the either the Zafira or the Vectra. The 2.2 petrol in the Omega had slightly less bhp and only 205Nm of torque. The 2.5DTI Omega had the same horsepower as the 1.9CDTI engine in the Zafira or Vectra (150bhp) but less torque (300Nm compared with 320Nm of the Zafira or Vectra).

On the basis of these figures, the Zafira or Vectra should be as least as good as the Omega.

I was rating it higher because of the vast interior, top value for money, greater kerbweight, RWD and much higher tow limit and it not being FWD. I have a Vectra estate, albiet old type, and consider it much lacking as a towcar, so much so that I don't even tow with it anymore. Also PC rate the Omega as a great tow car in their old type review pages.

David, your old Vectra Estate may have been smaller internally than the Omega but the current Vectra Estate, 2004-on, is larger (GM knew the Omega would be withdrawn). The BMW engine doesn't have a good reputation in the Omega, although it's well regarded when fitted in BMW's!

I've followed this thread with interest and I'd like to comment on my Vectra. It's an 01 plate 2.2 petrol estate. It has loads of grunt when towing our van but the fuel consumption is frightening. I reckon about 15 mpg towing and maybe double that solo. Afew weeks ago I test drove the X Trail SVE. Very nice and impressed with it I was too. When it came to the crunch I was offered
