VED increase.

Yesterday being a bit idle and hearing about VED increases, I checked the VED rate for our 2021 CO2 171gm car for next year as due in March 2026. Does not seem to be much of a change at £195 for March next year.

However I did notice that anyone buying a new car valued at under £40k even with a low emission of less than 100gm will pay almost double VED in first year. It seems that any government does not understand that not everyone wants an EV as for many people an EV is impractical.

So how much does your, new to you, lexus hybrid cost next year as against this last year.

I think you will find EV’s will be paying the same,carrot gone.
The first year rate remains differentiated, from £10 (0 CO2 vehicles) up to £5490 for vehicles over 255g CO2/Km.

The rate is the same for year 1 onwards (£195) and may include the ECS (luxury tax) for years 2 to 6.

Might have to change my car looking at hand controls and push brake fitted my winch is transferable so been looking at a Ford Kuga Fhev so has that increase or (£195)

I don't think the rational is based on what we "want" but what they have decided we should be having to meet their environmental targets.

Whether though those targets are "right or wrong" if the whole environmental balance is taken into account, I am far from convinced is fully understood. Suspect like most things arguments are based on quite selective aspects that support the intent.

VED is seen as an effective tool to bias our buying, probably in that they are right, if taxing a particular car is too expensive I for one will opt not to buy that vehicle.
As it is just happy our last new car we purchased back in 2016, though given time they could still find a way to speed these on to the scrapyards.

BB I thought your Ford was Motorbility? Apologies if that is not the case.

With a Motability Scheme car, the Motability Scheme itself covers insurance, servicing, and vehicle excise duty (VED), also known as road tax, as part of the lease package, meaning the user doesn't need to pay for these separately.

I see Vauxhall is reducing the price of their EVs to below £40k which potentially saves a buyer £2125 as below £40k the cars aren’t eligible for the “ luxury car tax”. They pay £10 in year one, and £195 in year two. Noticeable that the £40k threshold has been in place for quite some time and like income tax thresholds hasn’t risen as car prices have risen.

Freezing thresholds is becoming the bane of everyone's lives - they're tax increases by stealth.

If you work it out the VED payment per year is a very small percentage of the actual overall costings, unless of course the list price is over £40k, which a large number of fairly run of the mill, as opposed to "luxury" cars are when the VED becomes simply absurd.
