Vintage caravan travelling into Europe

Hello gents and ladies,

I am a pround owner of little vintage Cheltenham van that we bought few years ago from an older couple. It has been occasionally used around but we had a recent idea to take him for a trip to a continent ( maybe Italy). We don't really have any papers for it? Would it be possible to get Cris for such a van? Any advice?

Many thanks,

Hi and welcome. I don't think you need any papers to travel except obviously insurance. Green card, (or is it cards). But it would not hurt, if possible, to take proof of ownership, service records, weighbridge records.

I could well be wrong.

Perhaps when insuring the caravan the cover note papers should be proof of ownership? I don't think a green card is required?

Welcome to the forum, It should be able to register it wih Cris, but it is not nessasary, if you have a reciept of purchase, all the better, are you going to cover your travel with breakdown insurance, ie Red Pennant, as that might help if you are stopped by authoritys, I never have been in over 5 years of Continental travel. Enjoy your trip when it happens.

You do not have to register a caravan with CRIS, its not a formal legal document and its not required but it can be helpful.

Proof of insurance is not proof of ownership, all it proves is the item is insured.

If you intend to travel abroad, you must seek specific advice about the documentation needed for the destinations you intend to travel too. If you are a member of either of the caravan clubs they might be in a better position to offer more specific and reliable advice.

Insurance is not proof of ownership, but would be supporting documentation. During Brixit, it was suggested that you may need a green card for the car and one for the van. But I don't know what they eventual outcome was.

Green cards are not needed for travel in the EU.
Provided the caravan has a chassis number then I would register it with CRIS.
£15 is nothing in terms of owing a caravan and it provides a document that is recognised by the authorities in the UK.
All authorities in the EU expect to see an ownership document for a caravan. EU caravans have such registration documentation by law as they are considered to be a seperate road going vehicle with their own registration number plate.

I think that is all that is required in the EU. As V5 is not proof of ownership either.

You do not get a V5 document for a caravan.
but you do for the car that is towing it and that V5 is not proof of ownership. It was a referral to the ownership and not the vehicle or trailer. Apologies for not being clear, but thought everyone would understand the point.

Until Covid, I took my caravans to southern Spain each year for 25 years. All I've ever been asked to produce by way of documentation is my driver's licence, my insurance certificate and my passport. Never once has there been any query regarding the caravan.

....but I bet your caravans were CRIS registered and you took the document with you... :)
The OP asked if he should get his older caravan CRIS registered as he has no documents at all and he may tow it in Europe.

I would go along with the Prof and ask one of the clubs if you are using them and if not whoever you booked with. We have never been asked for proof of ownership though and as far as I can tell they are only interested in you having third party insurance for the caravan.

How will a traffic officer in the EU they know that without having to contact the DVLA as we do not display a tax disc?
