Hi all

I have a problem with my pc.

I have a pop up which I can't get rid of. It first appeared on Monday and my hubby clicked it, because it said our computer was infected. That's when all the trouble started.

In the history there were loads of web address's I've run a full scan on norton and on defender, they each found one which was destroyed. but the pop up is still here. A yellow triangle saying I have a psw.xvir trojan, and I can only remove it if I click the baloon, no chance. It says it will remove psw.x-vir spyware. Please help I'm exausted after hours on my machine.

Sorry to hear about your problem. I had something similar recently and downloaded the free 15day trial of Counterspy. It found it and sorted it. After the 15 days I bought it.

Free trial here http://www.sunbelt-software.com/CounterSpy.cfm

I think you may need a pro's help.

Don't touch it and disconect from the phone line might be a good idea if you can't get jims idea to remove it.

I am not surprised that you still have problems as you have Norton installed.

Norton uses so much of the computers resources that it slows the machine down, and causes more problems than it fixes.

A better Anti Virus is AVG Free, as the name suggests, its free, and it is far better than Norton.

In addition for spyware etc, get Spybot Search and Destroy, again free!

A relatively new but very effective tool is Pareto XoftSpy SE, another free utility.

Both AVG and Spybot are on Major {pipe delimiter}Geeks site, XoftSpy is on Paretologic site.

I posted recently that after running the freeAVG and ZoneAlarm firewall for years with no trouble I decided to change. I bought a new computer from Mesh and decided to use Norton anti-virus and firewall because it came free with the package I have from BT Broadband. From day one I had nothing but problems with some programmes not running and at other times my new computer crashing. After three system restores and uninstalling of Norton I ran the basic windows firewall whilst I downloaded AVG and ZoneAlarm. Since installing them I've had no problems at all, everything is tickety boo and runs a treat. In the past when I've had problems and rung the support line it always seemed one of the Tech's first questions was "do you run Norton"? I smelled a rat then so against my better judgement by installing Norton on my computer I paid the price.

Smiley - get rid of Norton once you have the problem sorted :O)

I have BT Broadband with Norton included. I was previously using Norton, after the initial conflict of trying to uninstall an old version I have had no problems at all. I don't have to go into Norton for live updates everything is done for me.

What's a pop up !!!!!!

The only thing it doesn't completely stop is spam, but at least it is all directed to a secondry file and the whole lot can be deleted in one go.

Smiley, I've just done a lot of reading on various forums and from what I see a concensus of opinion is that http://www.superantispyware.com/

is a good free programme which will remove the Smitfraud trojan that you have. Apparently it's user friendly too.

Had the same pop up on mine . The pop up is the virus and directs you to a site to sell you an anti virus download.

Get rid of the pop up by right clicking the toolbar , go to properties and change popup to hide always.

Out of site out of mind.

Smiley,

It sounds just like the "virus" i picked up, funnily enough on monday as well, I took my laptop to our IT dept to sort it out, turns out it was not a virus but an addware, just to get you to buy the "anti virus" software.

The bad news is that it was quicker for them to wipe my hard drive & re-load everthing, fortunately I take daily back ups onto an external hard drive, so i didn't loose everything, just what i did on Monday.

The reason to bother is that many such unwanted "additions" to your computer leave you open to having all your personal information stolen, and access to your bank accounts, if you use on line banking.

I have to agree it is a mistake to ignore these things. The pop up message is just a symptom; the disease could be very nasty.

It confirms what you say on some of the forums I've been reading about this particular trojan.

I have used Norton's for at least the last 6-7 years and have never had a virus, (touches wood a quick as I can) Never buy direct from Symantec as they are more expensive than some of the big high street stores.

Thanks everyone for your help I am virus and adware free. I found info from Lancs universcity It took a while, I made a list of everything that was done on the machine, did a search a started deleted averything one by one. You wouldn't believe the names on some of the pages.

It did the trick we did have a virus and an adware I think. the virus was high risk called ZLOB. My norton was going besirk after getting rid of things, did the full system scan and norton battered it into submission and gave it the boot.
