Volkswagen Touran

Thinking of purchasing a new VW Touran sport 2.0 TDI 140bhp to tow my 2004 Bailey Pageant Auvergne 1340kgs.

Towed for 4 years with Passat 130 tdi wonderfull towcar with power to spare.

Anybody out there had any good/bad experiences with the Touran as tow car, I have driven one solo and thought I was driving a hot hatch, quite impressed with seating /driving position and loads of storage space.

I seem to remember a report of this car a while ago in this magazine and from what I remember it had a good report.

Would welcolm any readers comments please.

Wayne - I have a Touran 2.0 TDI Sport 140 bhp and I have been towing a Bailey Pageant Champagne for the last year with it, and it is absolutely great!

Last January I changed my Mitsubishi Galant 2.5 V6 petrol (which was also good) for the Touran. I thought I would try a diesel as everyone seems to think they are best for towing - it's amazing. No regrets at all. The torque is fantastic. Set the cruise control and it happily stays at 60 (or 70 if abroad) in 6th gear all day long. It's quiet and very comfortable, with loads of space. In fact considering it is the same chassis as a Golf I don't know how it has all the space. The 7 seats are often useful around town - less so if touring as there isn't much luggage space with the 7 seats in use! Amazing acceleration when solo - as you say, almost hot hatch like!

It does about 40 mpg around town - more on a run obviously - and does about 28 mpg towing, according to the computer which I have checked is 100% accurate! It is very stable and gives you plenty of confidence when passing big lorries etc.

The only down side is that there is no spare wheel - only a blow up kit. I wasn't happy with that so I bought a spare wheel (new wheel and tyre about
