Volvo V70

I am looking to buy a used low mileage V70 or XC70 and ideally would like a D5 diesel. However, there seems to be quite a price premium on these models and I wonder what people think of the standard 2.4 diesel or even the 2.4 petrol.

I tow a Dart which ways approx 1250kg, although I may buy a bigger van at some time. Fuel economy is not a big concern as we do very low mileage.

Hi Jayoh We tow an Indiana MTPLM 1500 with a XC70 D5 SE LUX 85% match.Power is more than enough.Excellent car solo but we find suspension a bit soft for towing.Not the best tow car we have had.V70 may be a better bet and heavy enough for your van. Fred

3 or 4 times a year I share the driving of my friends Volvo V70 D5 Auto to Ireland and while I have no experience with this car of towing a caravn we do tow a boat approx. weight 1,200 Kg.

Towing and economy are suberb with each round trip about 1,200 miles.

No major problems with the car to date which has done 114,000 in under 4 years.

Avoid the 2.4 petrol like the plague, gutless & drinks fuel like it is going out of fashion, especially when it's combined to the 5 speed adaptive auto gearbox. Pay the extra and go for the D5, loads of power on tap + remarkable fuel economy, I currently return over 50 mpg on a run, and a shade under 30 when towing my Senator Arizona. I have owned & run both models and was very disappointed with the petrol model in both it`s pulling power & economy. The automatic version that I had would drop a gear on the slightest of inclines on a motorway, and to maintain a reasonable speed on the motorway towing it would almost rev it's b*lls off, and would return around 17mpg, and not much better for every day use solo at around 22 mpg. On a recent trip to Northumbria (200+ miles) with the Arizona on the hook, the D5 cruised comfortably at 60mph where permitted, and hardly ever came out of top gear, and returned around 30mpg, and above all it was a totally relaxed drive.

I've had a D5 manual 5 speed for the past 3 years. It's the best car I've owned. My van is 1500kg mtplm and it's very steady. On motorways it can go into 5th on cruise control and depending on the traffic of course it doesn't have to drop down very much. Easy driving and incredible mpg for a big car.

I owned a 2.4 petrol v70 and have to say it was the best towcar i have owned, made the mistake of selling it to buy a 4x4 but am now i the process of buying it back. The fuel consumption was far better than the diesel trooper i have just sold and the ride was second to none.

And now with the price of diesel there can`t be much difference in the costs.
