can anyone help, are these cars any good for towing a caravan.

have been asking around on my travels, and have been told by 2 different mechanics that the clutch and gearbox are not up to the job of towing a van.

great forum by the way.

I tow with Skoda Octavia 1.9Tdi PD 105, caravan weight 1200kgs. It's my 2nd Octavia, never had any problems with clutch/gearbox. the Golf engine is just a higher rated version of my engine so can't see why there might be a problem. My friends have same engine as yours in VW Sharan, again no problems.

In Brtain,s best towcars revealed 2008 up to 1425kg the Volkswagon Golf 1.9 TDI came 3rd and was last year,s winner.Thay said nothing about clutch but did say "A fine towcar,in spite of the noisy engine".
 
sounds good so far, mine is a 2001 1.9, i don,t know what year the award was for.

i am hoping someone is going to say that they have the same make and model, and the car is very good at the job.

I have a 99 1.9 gt tdi 115bhp.

Car has done 154k and never missed a beat.

We have towed a series 5 Pagent with this car to Yorkshire from Hampshire with no problem at all. (Caravan was empty @ 1245kg).

Car returns avg of 45-50 mpg solo and 34-37 towing.

Absolutely no probs at all.

I suggest you try taking your car to a mechanic who has the slightest inkling of what he`s talking about Chris, as I certainly wouldn`t let these clowns anywhere near a car of mine.

This engine/gearbox combo and its variants in the Golf/Passat/Sharan/Alhambra/Galaxy/Octavia/Superb/Leon/A3/A4/A6 etc have pulled thousands of vans millions of miles and won awards doing so.

Now who would you take advice from?
 
I towed with a 1.9 TDi 115 bhp Golf GT from 2002 through to 2005.

No problems at all towing a 2000 Bailey Ranger 440/4 that we had at that point.

We towed all over Scotland and from our home in North East Aberdeenshire to the South of France 3 times with it.
