Hi

I currently tow happily with a TDI saloon Passat, but am quite taken with the idea of getting a VW Touran next time (again the TDI version)

Does anyone know how the kerbweights of the two vehicles compare, and has anyone got expereice, good or bad, of the touran as a tow car?

I,ve got an '05 Touran 140 TDI, DSG, and it's unladen weight, verified on two different weighbridges when new, was 1725 Kgs.

To the best of my knowledge, the Touran is slightly heavier than the Passat, but don't expect to get any accurate info on weights off VW, as they have the weirdest method imaginable of detailing them.

Solo, and bearing in mind it's an auto, I get around 43 mpg, and towing a 1500 kg. 'van (which is the car's limit), I drop to about 28 - but I must admit, I do tend to be fairly heavy on the right foot.

As a tow-car, it's superb, but, because I've got the DSG, I'll be taking out the extended warrenty on it's third birthday!

Hi Meister - Not that I'm aware of, but I can imagine that any repairs could turn out to be VERY expensive, and with Sod's law and my luck, that might just turn out to be the case within months after the warranty runs out.Looking on the brighter side though, at least the extended warranty would be peace of mind against all sorts of other problems that might materialize.

hi steve,

I have a touran 2.0ltr 140 bhp, i tow a baily ranger 500/5 and i can only say that it has been superb.

last summer i towed with it down to switzerland with no effort at all averaging 22/28 mpg.

i would not hesitate recommending one to you, if you do decide to get one the only thing to think about is if you buy the 7 seater version then you do not get a spare tyre, all you get is a compressor and a tube of sealent. Not practical at all especially when towing, so i bought a spare wheel and leave it in the van when towing.

But go for the 140bhp or the new 180 bhp model if you can stretch that far...
