Just completed a round trip to S,Wales of over 800 miles with the first outing with the VW Touran 2.0 Tdi (150bhp) pulling a Fleetwood Heritage single axle (Mptlm 1500kgs) and do you know what ?? You can stick your 4x4's!! I;ve had them, ML270 Guzzler and a Freelander Td4 ,,waste of money!! I can give you endless amounts of reasons why I wouldn't touch a 4wd again.

The Touran gave me 33mpg on the motorways and 29.5 around the A roads towing the van and it even delivers 46mpg solo, so anyone out there give me just one reason why I should use a 4x4 ?? I've had them,,,,never again!!

Swap my Range Rover for a Touran(ny Van) ??

Sorry, I'd rather poke pins in my eyes. I once rode across France in the Sister-in-Law's touran. What I saved in fuel I reckon I spent at the osteopath afterwards. Whereas in the Rangie I can do 400 miles and get out without so much as a crease in my shirt.

Fuel economy is only relatively important, not the be all and end all. For me personally if it got to the stage where I had to mind every last litre of diesel then it wouldn't be fun any more so I'd pack up. The most important thing for me is having a good time 'cos let's fact it, everyday life can be quite stressful with the workplace as it is and it's nice to get some respite from all that. If that costs me an extra 20 quid in fuel then so be it.

That said, if you like the Touran then happy days. It's your car and that's all that counts. To quote from that timeless film The Life of Brian, "Yes, we are all individuals"

Hi Tom, Must agree with you. I have a Disco 3 and have decided to get rid and have gone for the 170BHP Touran Sport. The Disco is a fine car, but at a hefty price. The disco demands serious annual money in road tax, service, maintenance, fuel and depreciation.I have calculated from what I paid for it new and its now nearly 3yrs old, done 22k miles, run it etc, it has cost me about

If you need to cut costs then obviously a lighter less powerful car can fit the bill.

But then you lose the 4x4 option, while with the xtrail, crv etc, that option is always available, along with a 100kg nose weight limit. And a 2200kg/2000kg tow limit.

So your caravan choice is is not so limited.

You get what you pay for?

By the way Tom, is your touran a old model? vw dont make a 150bhp touran, but do make a 138bhp, and 168bhp version.

Hi Ray

It's a 2004 2Ltr Tdi and the exact Bhp is 147. They do 3 variants the 1.9tdi (104bhp) 2Ltr , 147Bhp and 170 Bhp.

Drove lots of these smaller MPVs and wasn't struck by the Touran. However I must stress that I would only have been able to have the 1.9 / 105 SE (company car). Rough engine, seats that you perched on rather than in, and quite a dull thing to drive. Went for the Ford C-Max which is a bit smaller but drives like a Focus.

Have since driven three Passats with the 2.0 / 138 engine - still rough and noisy by comparison with the old 1.8TDCi I have in the C-Max...

Still, got an X-Trail for towing duties, probably half way between MPVs and full-blown Chelsea tractors. Each to his own, drive safely!

Hi Tom,

Ray is right the only variants in Touran TDi are the 90 BHP 1.9, 105 BHP 1.9, 138BHP 2.0 & 168BHP 2.0. ( I work for VW)

However they did for a while do a 2.0 FSi petrol engine which had 150BHP. Further VW did produced a 150 BHP 1.9lt in a diesel version of the Golf GTI, but this engine was never produced in a Touran.

Mike,

I have owned the 105 BHP version and i felt it a little sluggish when transporting 5 adults never mind towing and would recommend any of the 2.0l diesel versions as a min. I have a smax with the 2.2 l tdi and whilst noisy offers pretty good towing capability?

Cheers

David
