My husband and i want to purchase a touring caravan, always wanted a caravanett but to costly for us.We now think we may have enough to buy a van . not knowing the first thing about them we would like some advise on the best one to buy etc.would it be advisable to join a caravan club,is our 115 bhp van ok for towing.how does the insurance work for the van.

Practical Caravan Magazine has plenty of information for new caravanners and potential buyers.
Before purchasing your first caravan there are some things to bear in mind.
The kerb weight of your towing vehicle along with any manufacturers specified towing weight limit needs to be checked to determine the weight of the caravan that you can safely and legally tow.
If the driver of the towing vehicle passed their driving test after 1st January 1997 restrictions apply unless a B+E licence category is held by the driver.

If you've never owned a caravan or tried caravanning it might be best to try a modestly priced tourer initially before investing big bucks in a newer model until you are sure that caravanning is to your taste. After you have worked out what you can legally and safely tow you will enjoy looking in different caravans to see which layout you like best, have a look round dealers forecourts where there will be new and used caravans for you to check out.
Your vehicle insurance policy should provide third party cover for towing as long as you inform your insurance provider and tell them that you have a towbar fitted.
You can insure your caravan separately against accidental damage or theft via a separate caravan insurance, members will be happy to recommend reputable insurers.
There are two main clubs,in alphabetical order the Camping and Caravanning Club
and the Caravan Club
The links will navigate to the home pages of both clubs which provide masses of information for new caravanners which is available to non members.
Which club (if any) to join is often debated on this forum (!) but it might be best to ask the 101 other questions first.

As usual Parksy is spot on with his advice. Have you looked on thsi website for "caravans for sale" as layouts will also be available?

I'd overlooked the Caravan Finder which as Ian rightly pointed out shows various layouts of new and used caravans and allows buyers to enter their criteria to find suitable caravans

The only problem with ads is that when you make an inquiry the sellers never seem to respond or respond several days later!
