Water pump

Hi

I've just bought 2nd caravan that has hot and cold water served by a submersible pump placed in the aquroll. However the pump is operating all the time. I was wondering if ther is anyway i could put a pressure switch on to the system to turn the pump on/off when the taps or shower are used. If not is there a pump that has the switch already fitted that would do the trick. Something simple would be nice as the only skill i possess is with carving chisels.

It sounds as though you already have a pressure switch which needs adjusting, unless by some odd coincidence a tap with microswitch has failed in the ON position, which is quite rare.

Look under the seat where the water comes into the van and see if you have an oblong white "box" with a wheel control on the top and two wires going to the "box", if you have , that is the pressure switch, and turning the wheel clockwise should stop the pump, or anticlockwise,allow it to run.

With the water system full th epump should stop, opening the cold tap it should run,and closing the tap it should stop immediately.

With the hot tap, opening it should run, closing the tap it should run on for about 3 or 4 seconds to re pressurise the system.

Dont know what age your van is but mine is 1995 and has a pressure switch fitted inside the van behind the connection where you plug in the pump from the outside.

Take a look at Pump and heater problems in this section (about 4 pages back) there is some very good advice on there and even if it doesnt solve your problem the advice will broaden your knowledge.

On another note, make sure the battery is sufficiently charged as when mine did the same I had to switch the pump off at the control panel every time I used it, got battery checked, replaced

it, altered pressure switch, sorted. All on the advice given on here. Good luck

Hi there im back. my caravan is a swift corniche 14/2 1992 and is in excellent condition actually it has been fully restored with the help of my son inlaw. i think we have done a pretty good job. we have had it everything inspected and tested by a certifies inspetor and all is well. its just this water pump. i have been and looked at it from all angles and i cant find any form of switch mechanism anywhere. the wires just go straight to the pump. looking at the original manufacturers insructions i dont think there has ever been one. I thank both of you for you kind replies. so its onwards and upwards.

might sound odd but check the wiring my water pump wouldnt work at all few weeks ago tested the pump on a battery an it worked wiggled the wiring an it burst into life just wondering if the wiring ok

Brian, if you could not find a pressure switch on the cold pipe, then your system is a microswitch system.

In each tap is a microswitch which energises the pump when you open the tap.

If the pump runs continuously, then you either have a failed switch in one of the taps, or they are wired wrongly.

The negative wire goes straight to the pump inlet connection.

The positive wire runs around the van and is spurred off to each tap. When in operation you are only ever completing the positive circuit.

To check the microswitches, find the wires unde the taps and put a multimeter across the wire, having disconected them first from the supply wires, set on continuity, and operate the tap, it should indicate when the tap is On by a buzzer, and OFF by silence.

If you find one that stays ON all the time, that needs changing.
