what car

i need to tow approx 1750kg, with upto 5 people in car. want to buy second hand max budget about 4k, need as good mpg as possible. any suggestions??

hi, i think you will need a 4 x 4.

i had a vauxhall monterey ( same as a trooper) great towcar.

i had the 3.1td the 3.0 have injector problems.

jo-anne
The 3.0 trooper did have injector problems but there is a recall on them so they can be replaced F.O.C

Plenty of good 4x4's around for 4K - keep to Jap or grey import Jap and buy carefully. I'm thinking Shogun/Pajero, Landcruiser etc.

Forget good MPG though and expect only a max of 20mpg towing and about 25 max normal on any vehicle of this size and weight.

They are heavy cars and you have a heavy van - you don't get owt for nowt!

Incidentally I would not touch a 3.0 Trooper whatever anybody says in their defence - the engine has a number of fatal flaws some of which have not yet been resolved. Google ITOC to get the full story.

thanks for responses actually towing a boat so cheating a little to use your forum, worked out weight of boat and trailer and it is less than 1650 kg, someone said alhambra??

Hi Jon

We towed a 1550kg bowrider with a variety of tugs, the best for getting it up the slipway was a Discovery but it's usefulness ended there, corners and anything over 55mph on the road and the outfit was all over the place, A rear wheel drive BMW 530i was about the best allrounder closely followed by a VW Sharan which was the most stable but front wheel drive was a handicap on the slipway
